About Pencil Engineering
Pencil Engineering is an engineering design consultancy delivering mechanical design solutions for international clients. Our work spans industrial machinery, fabricated structures, sheet metal, weldments, material handling equipment, and custom-engineered products. We partner with our clients from concept through production, delivering designs that are practical, manufacturable, and production ready.
The Prospect
Pencil Engineering is hiring a remote Mechanical Design Engineer to own SolidWorks modeling, weldment design, sheet metal design, and manufacturing drawings for our projects. This is a hands-on execution role, not a supervisory one. You'll be modeling, detailing, and issuing drawings that go straight to the shop floor.
This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving practical engineering challenges, understand manufacturing processes, and take ownership of delivering high-quality engineering documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical systems, fabricated assemblies, and industrial equipment using SolidWorks.
- Develop sheet metal, weldment, and structural fabrication models and assemblies.
- Produce accurate manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and fabrication documentation.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to improve quality, cost, and manufacturability.
- Review existing designs and implement engineering improvements.
- Collaborate with internal engineers and clients to deliver technically sound solutions while meeting project schedules.
- Occasionally run or support basic FEA studies (SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent) to validate designs
Minimum Qualifications
- 2-4 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, with SolidWorks as your primary tool
- Strong, demonstrable experience in weldments and sheet metal design (this will be tested)
- Ability to independently produce clean, manufacturing-ready drawings - not just 3D models
- A personal laptop capable of running SolidWorks smoothly (we do not provide hardware for this role)
- Stable internet and a quiet space for video calls during working hours
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS.
- Working knowledge of GD&T.;
- Experience designing products that have been manufactured commercially.
- Experience working with international clients or manufacturing organizations.
What We Offer
- Opportunity to work on diverse engineering projects for US manufacturing companies.
- Exposure to a broad range of fabrication and machinery design challenges.
- A remote-first work environment.
- A technically driven team focused on engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
Before you apply:
This role requires completing an unpaid take-home SolidWorks assessment that takes 5-10 hrs. to complete before we schedule interviews. We ask this upfront so that only candidates who are genuinely interested and available invest the time. If you're not able to commit completing the assessment in the near term, please hold off on applying until you can.
