Position

Head – Civil Design | GIS Substation EPC

Experience

15–20+ years in civil/structural engineering, with substantial experience in GIS substation EPC projects. Candidates with experience in 220 kV, 400 kV and 765 kV substations will be preferred.

Qualification

B.E./B.Tech in Civil Engineering from a recognized university. M.Tech in Structural Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering is an advantage.

Role Summary The Civil Design Head will lead the complete civil and structural engineering function for GIS substation EPC projects, from tender engineering and basic design through detailed engineering,

IFC drawings, construction support, and project close-out.

The position will be responsible for technical leadership, design quality, engineering schedules, resource planning, client/consultant coordination, and effective interfaces with electrical, mechanical, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Civil & Structural Engineering Leadership

- Lead the civil/structural design team for GIS substations and associated transmission projects.
- Establish design basis, engineering philosophy, design criteria, and applicable codes/standards.
- Review and approve civil/structural calculations, drawings, specifications, BOQs, and engineering deliverables.
- Ensure timely release of IFC/AFC drawings in line with the EPC project schedule.
- Plan engineering manpower, deliverables, priorities, and design resources.

2. GIS Substation Civil Design

- Lead design and review of:
- GIS buildings/halls
- Control room buildings
- Transformer/reactor foundations
- GIS equipment foundations
- Equipment support structures
- Cable trenches and cable vaults
- Oil collection and oil drainage systems
- Fire-water and utility systems
- Roads and pavements
- Storm-water drainage
- Site grading and development
- Boundary walls and fencing
- Gantry and equipment foundations

- Ensure appropriate consideration of equipment loads, seismic loads, wind loads, vibration, maintenance access, transportation requirements, and equipment clearances.

3. EPC Engineering Interface

- Coordinate civil design with GIS, electrical, protection & control, mechanical, HVAC, fire protection, earthing, and MEP teams.
- Manage civil-electrical interface requirements, including:
- GIS equipment layout
- Cable entry and routing
- Embedded plates




- Anchor bolts
- Equipment foundations
- Building openings
- Floor loading
- Equipment access
- Crane/maintenance requirements
- Resolve interdisciplinary design conflicts before issue of IFC drawings.

4. Client & Consultant Coordination

- Act as the primary civil engineering interface with the client, consultant, utility, and statutory authorities.
- Lead technical meetings and design review meetings.
- Review and respond to client/consultant comments.
- Obtain approval of civil design documents and drawings.
- Manage technical deviations, design clarifications, and engineering change requirements.

5. Construction & Site Support

- Provide engineering support to construction teams during execution.
- Resolve site technical queries, RFIs, and construction-related design issues.
- Review and approve proposed site modifications and design changes.
- Participate in site visits, constructability reviews, and technical inspections.
- Ensure design is practical, economical, and suitable for construction.
- Minimize rework and construction delays resulting from design issues.

6. Tender & Proposal Engineering

- Support the business development/proposals team during EPC tendering.
- Review tender documents, technical specifications, site information, and geotechnical reports.
- Develop preliminary civil layouts and quantities.
- Prepare/review civil BOQs, estimates, technical assumptions, exclusions, and design deliverable lists.
- Identify technical risks, deviations, and opportunities for value engineering.

7. Design Quality & Compliance

- Ensure compliance with applicable:
- IS/IEC standards
- NBC
- IEEE requirements, where applicable
- Client/utility specifications
- International design standards such as ACI/Eurocodes, where applicable
- Implement engineering design-checking and approval procedures.
- Conduct design reviews, constructability reviews, and value-engineering studies.




- Ensure quality and consistency of all civil engineering deliverables.

8. Team Management

- Lead and mentor civil, structural, and CAD/BIM engineering teams.
- Allocate work and monitor engineering productivity.
- Conduct technical reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Develop engineering standards, templates, calculation methodologies, and design practices.
- Coordinate with external design consultants when required.

Essential Experience The candidate should have proven EPC experience in:

- GIS Substation Engineering
- HV/EHV substations – preferably 220/400/765 kV
- Complete civil design from tender/basic engineering to detailed engineering and IFC
- GIS building design and equipment interface
- Transformer and reactor foundations
- GIS equipment foundations
- RCC and structural steel design
- Control/relay buildings
- Cable trenches and utility systems
- Site grading and drainage
- Roads and pavements
- Geotechnical/foundation engineering
- Civil-electrical interface management
- Client/consultant design approval
- Construction engineering and site support

Software

- AutoCAD
- STAAD.Pro / ETABS
- MS Office
- Revit/BIM – preferred
- Civil 3D – preferred
- Knowledge of engineering document management systems

Preferred Profile

- 15–20+ years of total experience.
- Minimum 8–10 years of relevant substation/GIS EPC experience preferred.
- Experience with complete EPC lifecycle: Tender → Basic Engineering → Detailed Engineering → IFC → Construction Support → Commissioning/Close-out.
- Strong experience managing client, consultant, engineering subcontractors, procurement, and construction interfaces.
- Solid understanding of constructability, cost optimization, engineering schedules, and EPC project execution.
- Excellent technical leadership and team-management skills.
- Willingness to travel to project sites when required.
