Role Overview: Full-Time

Focus: Peripheral Device Integration, Hardware Systems Testing, Firmware/API Verification Test Automation

Job Summary

We are seeking a Mid to Senior QA Engineer to lead quality assurance and test execution across specialized backend device services and hardware peripheral integrations. In this role, you will be responsible for testing the software interfaces, background services, and drivers that communicate with physical hardware-including credit card payment terminals, thermal printers, barcode scanners, and custom system components. Working closely with backend engineers, technical operations, and product managers, you will design robust manual and automated test strategies to validate real-time hardware workflows, peripheral state transitions, fault handling, and hardware API stability.

Key Responsibilities

- Hardware Peripheral Testing: Design, execute, and maintain test scenarios for physical hardware components, peripheral drivers, and low-level system services.
- System Service Validation: Validate backend services, system daemons, and background workers under various physical conditions (e.g., paper out, card reader timeouts, hardware disconnects, power cycles).
- API Service Automation: Build and expand test automation suites for backend APIs, hardware abstraction layers, and IPC/socket channels using modern automation and mock tools.
- Defect Lifecycle Management: Identify, log, prioritize, and track hardware, driver, and service defects with precise system logs, peripheral state data, and reproduction steps in Jira or Azure DevOps.

- Compliance Transaction Verification: Test transaction workflows to ensure strict adherence to security protocols, data integrity, and industry standards (e.g., PCI compliance).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with backend .NET engineers and technical operations to debug edge-case hardware faults, refine acceptance criteria, and ensure reliable releases.

Required Qualifications Technical Skills

- Experience: 4+ years of professional quality assurance experience, with direct experience testing software integrated with physical devices, hardware, or external peripherals.
- Hardware Systems Testing: Strong expertise testing software that interfaces with physical peripherals (e.g., credit card readers/POS terminals, receipt printers, scanners, or kiosk components).
- API Backend Testing: Solid proficiency in testing RESTful APIs, backend services, and asynchronous processes using tools like Postman, Swagger, or custom CLI harnesses.
- Test Automation: Hands-on experience developing automated integration or API test suites using tools like Playwright, Selenium, C#, or Python.
- Tooling Logs: Expertise in analyzing system logs, Windows Event Logs, and device diagnostic traces to pinpoint root causes.

Core Competencies Cultural Fit

- Self-Motivated Learner: Curious about low-level systems, eager to understand complex hardware specs, and proactive in expanding technical skills.
- Strong Individual Contributor: Able to take ownership of hardware test setups, ask critical architectural questions, and execute test cycles independently.
- Reliable Team Player: Values transparent communication, acts as a quality advocate, and collaborates smoothly with backend developers and operations teams.
- Remote-Ready Communicator: Clear, accurate, and prompt communication across chat tools (Slack, Teams) and project management systems (Jira, Azure DevOps).

Preferred / "Nice-to-Have" Qualifications

- Experience testing self-service kiosk, Point-of-Sale (POS), or transaction processing systems.
- Familiarity with hardware communication interfaces (Serial/COM, USB, HID, TCP/IP sockets).
- Exposure to mocking or simulating physical hardware interfaces for automated test runs.
- AI-Assisted Quality Engineering: Experience using AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) to generate edge-case test data, draft test scripts, and parse complex log output faster.
