The Estimation Engineer is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, quantity take-offs, rate analyses, and bid proposals for construction projects. The role ensures that all estimates reflect current market conditions, project specifications, and engineering principles. Estimation is a critical function that directly influences project profitability, competitive bidding, and cost control.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Quantity Take-Offs (QTO)
- Extract material quantities from architectural, structural architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
- Prepare detailed BOQs in accordance with project specifications and standards.
- Cross-check quantities across drawings, IFC revisions, and tender documents.
2. Rate Analysis & Cost Estimation
- Prepare item-wise rate analysis for civil, structural, finishing, and services works.
- Collect current market rates for materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor prices.
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for tender submission or internal budgeting.
- Apply productivity norms, wastage factors, and overheads.
3. Tendering & Bid Preparation
- Study tender documents, specifications, and scope of work.
- Identify commercial conditions, exclusions, and clarifications.
- Prepare technical and commercial bid proposals.
- Coordinate with procurement to source quotes for specialized items.

Coordination with Engineering & Procurement
- Work with design teams to interpret drawings, resolve scope gaps, and ensure estimate accuracy.
- Liaise with procurement for vendor rates, material pricing, and subcontract quotations.
- Support value engineering discussions and cost optimization initiatives.
5. Cost Benchmarking & Database Management
- Maintain an updated cost database of materials, labour, and equipment.
- Track historical project costs to improve accuracy of future estimates.
- Update unit rate libraries and benchmarking sheets.
6. Risk & Scope Analysis
- Identify scope ambiguities, risks, and assumptions affecting cost.
- Conduct comparative analysis between tender BOQ and internal estimates.
- Highlight potential cost-saving opportunities and commercial risks.
7. Post-Tender Support
- Assist in negotiations with clients and subcontractors based on estimate data.
- Support project teams during initial mobilization with budget breakdowns.
- Provide BOQ clarifications and pricing rationales as required.
8. Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare detailed cost reports, estimate summaries, rate build-up sheets, and revision logs.
- Ensure documentation traceability for all assumptions, quotes, and calculations.
- Present estimates and cost models to management for approval.
