Role Overview
The Associate Professor of General Surgery is a senior academic-clinical faculty position responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervised surgical training, patient care, assessment, research, and departmental service. The role reports to the Head of Department or Professor and works across classrooms, bedside clinics, outpatient and inpatient services, emergency duty, and operation-theatre schedules. This is an in office appointment in Gangtok, Sikkim. The appointee will strengthen learner competence, safe surgical practice, clinical governance, and patient satisfaction through disciplined teaching and continuous improvement. The employer is a confidential tertiary teaching hospital integrating patient care, education, clinical training, and research.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver structured lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, and clinical classes for MBBS students in alignment with the approved curriculum.
- Conduct postgraduate seminars, case discussions, journal clubs, clinical meetings, and bedside teaching for General Surgery trainees.
- Mentor interns, residents, and postgraduate students in clinical reasoning, procedural competence, professional conduct, documentation, and patient communication.
- Plan and implement competency-based teaching, formative feedback, workplace-based assessment, and remedial support for learners requiring improvement.
- Serve as an internal or external examiner when appointed and contribute to fair, confidential, and evidence-based undergraduate and postgraduate assessment.
- Attend scheduled outpatient clinics, evaluate new and follow-up patients, establish management plans, and maintain timely clinical records.
- Manage inpatients admitted under the assigned unit and respond appropriately to interdepartmental referrals requiring surgical evaluation.
- Provide emergency surgical assessment and treatment during allocated on-call duties, escalating complex cases through established clinical pathways.
- Perform scheduled and emergency operations within credentialed privileges while supervising postgraduate trainees according to competence and patient-safety requirements.
- Lead perioperative planning, informed-consent practice, antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention, morbidity review, and safe discharge coordination.
- Coordinate with anaesthesia, critical care, radiology, pathology, nursing, allied health, and other specialties to deliver multidisciplinary care.
- Contribute to ethically approved research,
indexed publications, clinical audits, conferences, continuing medical education, and departmental academic output.
- Advance patient satisfaction and service quality by reviewing feedback, resolving care concerns, monitoring outcomes, and implementing measurable improvements.
- Provide reasonable faculty coverage during colleagues leave and undertake additional academic, clinical, administrative, or public-education duties assigned by the Head of Department.
Required Qualifications
- MBBS from an institution recognised under applicable Indian medical-education requirements.
- MS or DNB in General Surgery from a recognised institution; DNB equivalence must satisfy the conditions applicable to teaching appointments.
- Valid medical registration under applicable law and eligibility to practise the specialty without restriction.
- Documented eligibility for appointment as Associate Professor in General Surgery under current National Medical Commission requirements.
- Completion of required Basic Course in Medical Education and Basic Course in Biomedical Research, or a valid pathway permitting completion within the prescribed period after appointment.
Required Experience
- The standard teaching pathway requires at least 4 years of documented experience as Assistant Professor in General Surgery in a recognised medical institution, together with the research and faculty-development requirements applicable under current NMC regulations. Candidates qualifying through another expressly permitted NMC pathway, including the relevant cumulative post-postgraduate government-hospital experience route, may also be considered after documentary verification. Experience must include independent and supervised operative care, OPD and inpatient management, emergency surgery, undergraduate teaching, postgraduate teaching, learner assessment, and postgraduate supervision. All experience, appointment orders, relieving records, teaching evidence, registration records, publications, and course certificates must be verifiable.

- Broad-based general surgical assessment, diagnosis,
decision-making, operative planning, and postoperative management.
- Independent performance of procedures within credentialed scope and safe supervision of trainee participation.
- Emergency surgery, trauma evaluation, resuscitation coordination, escalation, and perioperative risk management.
- Outpatient, inpatient, referral, critical-care interface, discharge, follow-up, and continuity-of-care workflows.
- Competency-based medical education, curriculum delivery, bedside teaching, assessment design, feedback, and remediation.
- Clinical documentation, informed consent, medical records, patient confidentiality, medico-legal awareness, and ethical practice.
- Research methods, literature appraisal, clinical audit, manuscript development, publication ethics, and academic presentations.
- Quality improvement, infection prevention, antibiotic stewardship, morbidity-and-mortality review, and patient-safety systems.

Preferred or Value-Added Qualifications
- Laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgical expertise, plus additional achievement in trauma, critical care, education, simulation, research, quality, digital systems, or mentoring.
Professional Tenure and Background
Preferred candidates will show progressive responsibility through senior residency and faculty service, with at least 4 years as Assistant Professor unless another current NMC-permitted pathway applies. Evidence should include operative exposure, academic work, ethical practice, sound outcomes, and dependable service in recognised teaching or comparably governed institutions.
