Role & responsibilities
To lead and strictly govern the entire Indirect Tax function for Jai Raj Ispat Limited across our Hyderabad corporate office, the Hyderabad secondary steel plant, the Bellary sponge iron facility and the Kurnool primary steel plant. The incumbent must ensure 100% statutory compliance, rigorously optimize tax liabilities, defend the company in complex litigation and provide strategic tax advisory on raw material supply chains. A critical immediate focus will be driving ITC management and tax strategy for the upcoming coke oven and captive power expansion as Kurnool scales towards 1.5 million tonnes and eventually 5 million tonnes capacity over a decade.
Key Responsibilities
1. Multi State Statutory Compliance & Reporting
- Direct the flawless computation and filing of all GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-6) across Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh jurisdictions.
- Enforce absolute compliance with E Way Bills and E Invoicing for large-scale inter-state movement of TMT bars, billets, sponge iron and bulk dispatches of granulated slag to cement manufacturers.
- Manage rigorous cross charge mechanisms and ISD (Input Service Distributor) allocations between the Hyderabad headquarters, the Hyderabad secondary steel plant, the Bellary sponge iron facility and the Kurnool primary steel plant.
- Execute timely filing of Annual Returns (GSTR-9) and Reconciliation Statements (GSTR-9C) with zero error tolerance.
2. Intensive ITC (Input Tax Credit) & Capex Management
- Execute strict periodic reconciliation of GSTR-2A/2B with purchase registers to maximize eligible ITC on raw materials (iron ore, coal and scrap) and massive ongoing capex investments.
- Lead the ITC strategy and compliance for the recent coke oven and captive power expansion at the Kurnool primary steel plant, ensuring precise handling of EPC contracts,
heavy machinery imports and domestic vendor payments.
- Implement aggressive systems to penalize or block payments to non-compliant vendors to entirely eliminate ITC leakage.
- Monitor and enforce exact accounting for ITC reversals (e.g. Rule 42 & 43) particularly concerning exempt supplies, manufacturing waste and the handling of un-granulated steel slag.
3. Audits, Assessments & High Stakes Litigation
- Represent Jai Raj Ispat Limited before GST authorities up to the Commissioner and Appellate Tribunal levels across all operating states.
- Draft watertight legal replies to show cause notices (SCNs), summons and departmental queries regarding complex classification issues such as the taxation of Dolochar waste, Blast Furnace Slag valuation and byproduct HSN disputes.
- Drive departmental GST audits and coordinate with top-tier external legal counsel to resolve legacy Excise, Service Tax and VAT disputes.
4. Strategic Advisory & Supply Chain Partnering
- Advise project procurement teams on the GST implications of capital goods sourcing, domestic procurement and import duties for the upcoming coke oven, captive power and future rolling mill expansions.
- Advise logistics teams on the precise tax implications of multi-state freight, RCM and continuous supply contracts across our facilities.
- Determine accurate HSN classifications and applicable GST rates for commercial byproduct sales.
- Evaluate the GST impact on advanced manufacturing processes and technology imports like the Danieli Endless Casting and Rolling line at the Kurnool primary steel plant.
- Keep executive leadership immediately updated on critical notifications, circulars and advance rulings that impact both the primary and secondary steel manufacturing sectors.
5. Systems Automation & Process Control
- Ensure the ERP system is stringently configured to handle complex tax codes for primary steel manufacturing, secondary steel manufacturing operations in Hyderabad, upcoming coke oven operations and slag sales while automatically rejecting non-compliant entries.
- Establish and enforce non-negotiable SOPs for the taxation, procurement and accounts payable teams.
6. Team Leadership & Accountability
- Command and mentor a high performing team of tax managers and executives stationed across corporate and plant locations.
- Establish strict KPIs focused on zero-defect compliance, deadline adherence and maximum ITC realization.
Preferred candidate profile
- Education: Qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) or Cost & Management Accountant (CMA) with a strong preference for an additional LLB degree.
- Experience: 12 to 18 years of intense post qualification experience with at least 5 to 7 years exclusively leading GST functions in a multi plant manufacturing environment.
- Industry Requirement: Background in Primary Steel Manufacturing or Integrated Steel Plants with heavy industry experience handling bulk raw materials and slag. Open to candidates from heavy continuous manufacturing, handling bulk raw materials, large-scale capex and industrial byproducts.
- Technical Skills: Mastery of CGST/SGST/IGST Acts, hands-on expertise with ERP systems and exceptional legal drafting capabilities.
