Job Description - Application Server / Middleware Engineer

Role Summary

The Middleware Engineer / Application Server Engineer is responsible for designing, building, configuring, deploying, and supporting middleware platforms that run business-critical applications. The primary technology stack includes JWS Tomcat, Red Hat JBoss EAP, and NGINX, with a focus on high availability, security, performance, and compliance across non-production and production environments. The role partners with application teams, platform engineering, cloud, security, and operations to deliver resilient and scalable middleware services.

Key Responsibilities

1) Middleware Platform Engineering
Install, configure, administer, and support JWS Tomcat, Red Hat JBoss EAP, and NGINX across settings.
Design and maintain standardized middleware configurations, including clustering, load balancing, and SSL/TLS.
Manage middleware lifecycle activities: upgrades, patching, and decommissioning.




Support both embedded and standalone middleware deployments.

2) Operations Production Support
Provide L2/L3 production support for middleware platforms.
Troubleshoot complex issues across performance, memory, threading, connection pooling, and JVM tuning.
Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement permanent fixes.
Support incident, problem, and change management processes (ITIL-aligned).

3) Deployment Automation
Support application deployments (WAR/EAR/JAR) on Tomcat/JBoss, including container environments(preference noted for Amazon ECS).
Work with CI/CD pipelines (example given: GitLab CI) for automated deployments.
Implement and maintain automation using shell scripting and configuration/automation tooling such as Chef (or similar).

4) Security Compliance
Configure security hardening for middleware including TLS, certificates, authentication, and authorization.
