Role Overview

The Structural Engineer for Concrete Box Structures focuses on designing rigid, monolithic frames capable of resisting heavy earth, water, and traffic loads. This role involves analysing soil-structure interactions, performing advanced finite element modelling, and detailing reinforced or prestressed concrete to ensure the longevity and safety of underground and hydraulic infrastructure.

Core Responsibilities

Structural Analysis & Design
- Design rigid, monolithic concrete frames including culverts, subways, tunnels, storm water detention vaults, and underpasses.
- Analyse complex loading conditions, including hydrostatic pressure, lateral earth pressure, compaction surges, and live traffic loads (e.g., HL-93, railway, or heavy aircraft loading).
- Perform buoyancy and flotation checks for structures situated below the water table.
- Evaluate soil-structure interaction (SSI) to determine appropriate bedding, foundation requirements, and settlement risks.

Technical Documentation & Detailing
- Produce detailed reinforcement (rebar) layouts, focusing on joint rigidity,



crack control, and shear transfer in monolithic corners.
- Specify concrete mix designs, including durability requirements for sulphate resistance, low permeability, and waterproofing membranes.
- Prepare comprehensive structural calculation packages, technical specifications, and construction-ready drawings.

Compliance & Collaboration
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., AASHTO, ACI 350/318, ASTM, or local transit authority codes).
- Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to interpret soil reports and establish design parameters (e.g., lateral earth pressure coefficients, subgrade modulus).
- Coordinate with civil and utility engineers to resolve spatial conflicts and alignment constraints.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills
- Analysis Software: Proficiency in structural analysis software such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, or LUSAS.
