Job Description – Quality Engineer
Department: Projects / QA-QC
Designation: Quality Engineer
Reporting To: Project Manager / QA-QC Manager
Location: Project Site
Industry: Construction & Commercial Interior Fit-Out
Job Purpose
The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all construction and interior fit-out works are executed as per approved drawings, BOQ, specifications, approved materials, method statements, ITP, quality standards, and client requirements, with minimum rework and timely closure of quality observations.
Key Responsibilities1. Quality Planning & Control
- Prepare and implement the Project Quality Plan (PQP).
- Ensure implementation of approved ITP, Method Statements and Checklists.
- Establish inspection procedures for all major activities.
- Ensure works are executed as per approved drawings, specifications and project requirements.
- Identify potential quality issues before execution and recommend corrective measures.
2. Material Quality & Inspection
- Verify materials received at site against approved specifications, makes and samples.
- Coordinate and raise MIR – Material Inspection Request.
- Ensure only approved materials are used at site.
- Maintain material inspection and approval records.
- Coordinate with Purchase, Store and Site teams regarding material quality.
- Identify and report damaged, rejected or non-conforming materials.
3. Work Inspection
- Raise and coordinate WIR – Work Inspection Request for completed activities.
- Coordinate inspections with the client/consultant.
- Ensure inspection is carried out before proceeding with subsequent/covering works.
- Maintain inspection records and approvals.
- Ensure all rejected works are rectified and re-inspected.
4. Construction & Interior Fit-Out Quality
Monitor quality of works including:
- Civil works
- Masonry and plaster
- Flooring and tiling
- Marble/granite/stone works
- Gypsum partitions
- False ceiling
- Carpentry and joinery
- Doors and hardware
- Painting and polishing
- Glass works
- Waterproofing
- MEP-related works
- Electrical works
- HVAC works
- Plumbing works
- Fire-fighting/fire alarm works
- Furniture and other fit-out works
5. Drawing & Specification Compliance
- Review latest approved GFC/shop drawings before execution.
- Ensure site teams are working only with the latest approved drawings.
- Identify discrepancies between drawings, BOQ and actual site conditions.
- Coordinate with Design/Project teams for technical clarification.
- Ensure approved samples and mock-ups are followed during execution.
6. Quality Documentation
Maintain and regularly update:
- PQP
- ITP
- MIR
- WIR
- Method Statements
- Quality Checklists
- Material Approval Records
- Inspection Reports
- Test Reports
- Mock-up Approval Records
- NCR Reports
- Corrective Action Reports
- Snag/Punch List
- Quality Audit Reports
- Testing & Commissioning Records
- Handover Quality Documents
7. NCR & Corrective Action
- Identify non-conforming work/materials.
- Raise NCR (Non-Conformance Report) wherever required.
- Identify root cause of quality issues.
- Coordinate with Site/Project teams for corrective action.
- Track NCR closure within the agreed timeline.
- Ensure repeated quality issues are prevented through proper corrective measures.
8. Testing & Inspection
- Coordinate required testing as per approved ITP and specifications.
- Verify test reports and certificates.
- Coordinate with third-party testing agencies where required.
- Ensure testing is completed before handover.
- Maintain complete testing and commissioning records.
9. Snagging & Handover
- Conduct regular quality inspections and identify snags.
- Prepare activity-wise/area-wise snag lists.
- Coordinate with Site Engineers and subcontractors for closure.
- Verify completed snag rectification.
- Coordinate with client/consultant for final inspection.
- Ensure all quality documents are completed before project handover.
10. Subcontractor Quality Control
- Monitor subcontractor workmanship.
- Ensure subcontractors follow approved Method Statements, ITPs and Checklists.
- Conduct regular inspections of subcontractor works.
- Communicate quality requirements to subcontractors.
- Record and escalate repeated quality violations.
- Ensure subcontractors submit required quality documentation on time.

The Quality Engineer shall submit/update:

- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Civil Engineering or relevant discipline.
- 3–7 years of experience in construction, commercial interiors, fit-out or infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of construction quality standards and inspection procedures.
- Good understanding of PQP, ITP, MIR, WIR, NCR, Method Statements and Checklists.
- Ability to read GFC drawings, shop drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of MS Excel and basic AutoCAD.
- Positive communication and coordination skills.
Overall Accountability
The Quality Engineer is accountable for ensuring that no work is accepted without proper inspection and no unapproved material is used at site. The position is responsible for maintaining quality documentation, identifying defects at an early stage, minimizing rework, closing NCRs/snags, and ensuring that the project is completed and handed over as per the required quality, specification and client standards.
