About Nyaaya
Nyaaya is an open-access, digital resource that provides simple, actionable, reliable, and accessible legal information in multiple formats, helping solve day-to-day legal problems so that citizens are aware of their rights and feel empowered to seek justice.
About the Role
Nyaaya is looking for a motivated lawyer committed to advancing access to justice for women and children. The Consultant will provide legal representation in cases referred through Nyaaya’s community-based legal empowerment programme, undertake independent litigation, in collaboration with grassroots organisations and community members across Bengaluru.
This role is ideal for a lawyer with litigation experience who is passionate about working closely with communities and using the law as a tool for social justice.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle civil and criminal matters relating to women and children, including legal research, drafting, filing, court appearances, and follow-up.
- Take up cases referred through Nyaaya’s community legal empowerment programme and independently identify cases with the potential for strategic litigation.
- Review, document, and manage cases referred by Samvidhaan Fellows, ensuring timely legal intervention and appropriate case strategy.
- Provide legal counselling to clients and develop litigation strategies in consultation with the programme team.
- Mentor and guide Samvidhaan Fellows on legal processes, case documentation, client engagement, and referrals.
- Coordinate with beneficiaries, partner organisations, government authorities, and relevant stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of a case.
- Maintain accurate case records, litigation trackers, and periodic updates to support programme monitoring and learning.
Eligibility Criteria
- LL.B.
degree from a recognised university.
- Enrolled with a State Bar Council and eligible to practise.
- 3-4 years of litigation, legal aid, or rights-based legal practice.
Skills and Experience
- Strong litigation and case management skills.
- Familiarity with trial court procedures, drafting, and client counselling.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple cases.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging directly with communities.
- Fluency in Kannada and English is essential. Knowledge of Hindi will be an added advantage.
- Demonstrated commitment to access to justice, gender justice, child rights, or related social justice issues will be preferred.
Location and Remuneration
- This is a part-time position based out of Bangalore.
- The remuneration for this role is in the range of INR 20,000-30,000 depending on experience.
