Position Overview

Heartfulness Institute is looking for an Engineering Manager – Python (Hands-on) who is highly self-driven, technically solid, and capable of making sound architecture and design decisions independently. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who can build high-quality backend systems, mentor and review the work of employees, contractors, and volunteers, guide engineering direction, and use modern AI coding tools effectively to improve productivity, quality, and delivery outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Lead backend engineering initiatives as a senior hands-on technical leader while remaining deeply involved in architecture, coding, reviews, and delivery.

Make strong design and architecture decisions for scalable, maintainable, and secure Python-based systems.

Design, build, and maintain robust web applications, APIs, and backend services using Python and Django.

Demonstrate deep understanding of Django internals, including ORM behavior, middleware, request-response lifecycle, authentication and authorization patterns, performance optimization, and deployment considerations.

Use AI coding tools effectively for code generation, code review acceleration, debugging support, documentation assistance, and engineering productivity improvements, while maintaining strong judgment on code quality and system design.

Mentor, review, and guide engineers across a blended delivery model that may include employees, contractors, and volunteers.





Translate business requirements into well-structured technical solutions and break down complex work into independently deliverable components.

Collaborate with product, business, and cross-functional stakeholders to align technical execution with organizational needs.

Identify performance bottlenecks, reliability risks, and technical debt, and proactively drive improvements.

Contribute to database design, query optimization, API contracts, integrations, release planning, and production readiness.

Establish and reinforce best practices for code quality, maintainability, observability, and engineering discipline.

Exposure to Odoo is a plus for workflow, ERP, or business platform integration needs, but it is not mandatory.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

10+ years of experience in Python backend or web application development, with significant experience in Django-based systems.

Proven ability to make technical design decisions on architecture, frameworks, data models, scalability, and maintainability.

Strong expertise in Django internals is mandatory.

Demonstrated experience in a hands-on senior engineering role with technical leadership responsibilities.

Demonstrated ability to operate with high ownership, strong initiative, and minimal supervision; self-drive is critical for success in this role.

Strong understanding of REST APIs, database design, integration patterns, and production engineering practices.

Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools in day-to-day software development.

Strong problem-solving skills,



sound engineering judgment, and the ability to balance speed with quality.

Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and production deployment practices.

Familiarity with modern frontend-backend integration patterns and distributed systems concepts.

Exposure to Odoo customization, integration, or administration is desirable but optional.
