Position: Extension Field Officer
Department: Plantation / Coffee Development
Location: Nandanvan Estate, Kodaikanal
Reporting To: Plantation Manager / Estate Manager / Management
1. Job Purpose
To work closely with tribal and local farming communities at Nandanvan Estate, motivating, guiding, and supporting them in adopting organic Arabica coffee cultivation through proper technical practices, regular field follow-up, awareness programmes, and continuous extension support. The officer will act as a bridge between estate management and growers to ensure sustainable coffee development and improved productivity.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Farmer & Community Mobilisation
- Establish and maintain valuable working relationships with tribal/jungle communities and local growers.
- Motivate growers to adopt organic Arabica coffee cultivation and sustainable agricultural practices.
- Conduct regular awareness meetings, farmer interactions, demonstrations, and field visits.
- Identify interested growers and support them in developing new coffee cultivation areas.
B. Technical Extension Support
- Guide farmers on suitable Arabica varieties, planting methods, spacing, shade management, soil conservation, and organic nutrient management.
- Provide practical guidance on nursery management, planting, mulching, pruning, desuckering, weeding, and moisture conservation.
- Promote preparation and use of organic manure, compost, bio-fertilizers, botanical extracts, and other permitted organic inputs.
- Educate growers on Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM) and environmentally safe practices.
- Ensure growers understand and follow recommended cultivation practices at the appropriate crop stage.
C. Field Follow-up & Monitoring
- Conduct regular field visits and maintain farmer-wise field records.
- Monitor crop establishment, plant growth, nutrition, pest/disease incidence, shade conditions,
and general field maintenance.
- Identify problems at an early stage and report them to the Plantation Manager with suitable recommendations.
- Follow up on the implementation of technical advice given to each grower.
D. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain farmer database, field visit records, acreage details, crop condition, activities completed, and follow-up status.
- Prepare weekly/monthly field reports with photographs and progress updates.
- Maintain records of training programmes, grower meetings, demonstrations, inputs distributed, and grower participation.
- Support the preparation of reports and data required for management, organic certification, and other development activities.
E. Coordination & Awareness
- Coordinate with estate management, coffee technical personnel, and Coffee Board officials.
- Organise practical demonstrations and training programmes for farmers.
- Promote awareness on soil health, biodiversity conservation, water conservation, shade-tree management, and sustainable organic coffee production.
3. Required Qualification & Skills
- Qualification: Diploma / Degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Plantation Management, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: 3-5 years in coffee, plantation, agriculture extension, tribal/community development, or a related field preferred.
- Positive practical knowledge of Arabica coffee cultivation and organic farming practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly for working with rural and tribal communities.
- Willingness to undertake extensive field visits and trekking in hilly/forest areas.
- Basic computer knowledge – MS Word, Excel, email, photo/document handling, and preparation of field reports.
- Ability to maintain records, analyse field observations, and prepare clear reports.
- Knowledge of Tamil is essential; knowledge of other local languages/dialects will be an advantage.
4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Number of farmers/community members mobilised and trained.
- Area brought under / improved through organic Arabica coffee cultivation.
- Regularity and quality of farmer field visits and follow-up.
- Adoption rate of recommended coffee cultivation practices.
- Improvement in crop establishment, plant health, and field maintenance.
- Quality and timely submission of field records and reports.
- Successful implementation of farmer awareness and demonstration programmes.
5. Personal Attributes
- Good communication and listening skills.
- Patient and respectful when working with tribal communities.
- Strong field orientation; willing to travel and trek to remote fields.
- Ability to motivate people rather than simply give instructions.
- Honest, responsible, and disciplined.
- Ability to work independently.
- Comfortable working in hilly/jungle terrain and rural conditions.
- Knowledge of Tamil language and local tribal/community culture would be a major advantage.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
