A skilled fitter is a skilled worker who assembles, installs, and repairs mechanical systems. They work in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, construction, transportation, automotive, and HVAC.

Here are some of the tasks a skilled fitter performs:
- Review drawings: Review blueprints and drawings to determine the materials, methods, and settings needed for specific parts and processes
- Fit parts: Fit parts into machinery and equipment, and check for accuracy and fit
- Use tools: Use tools to cut, file, plane, bore, and drill metal
- Diagnose problems: Diagnose problems with machines and report issues to a manager
- Maintain machines: Perform maintenance on machines,



mechanical parts, and fluid power equipment
- Erect machines: Erect machines and equipment

Some skills that are key for a skilled fitter include:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills
- Exceptional welding and mechanical skills

While there are no formal educational requirements to become a fitter, a high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Vocational or technical training in welding, fabrication, or mechanical systems is also preferred.
