Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Power BI / Analytics Engineer to take ownership of the design, development, and optimisation of enterprise-level business intelligence and analytics solutions.

This is a hands-on role that involves working across the complete analytics lifecycle — from preparing and transforming data to building semantic models, developing Power BI reports, defining business metrics, optimising performance, and supporting solutions in production .

The role requires someone who can go beyond report development and understand how data, business requirements, modelling, and visualisation come together to create reliable and scalable analytics solutions. You will work closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, analysts, and technology teams to translate business requirements into meaningful insights and high-quality reporting solutions.

The ideal candidate should have strong expertise in Power BI, advanced DAX, SQL, data modelling, Power Query, PySpark, and Microsoft Fabric , along with strong problem-solving and stakeholder management skills. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to technical standards, improve existing analytics solutions, and mentor junior members of the team.

Key Responsibilities

? Power BI Development & Analytics

- Lead the design, development, and delivery of enterprise Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models.
- Own the complete reporting lifecycle, from understanding business requirements and preparing data to development, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Develop reporting solutions for different levels of the organisation, ranging from detailed operational dashboards to management and executive-level reporting.
- Build dashboards that present complex information in a clear, meaningful, and easy-to-understand manner.
- Ensure reporting solutions are accurate, consistent, scalable, and aligned with defined business requirements.
- Review existing Power BI solutions and identify opportunities to improve functionality, usability, performance, and maintainability.

? Data Modelling & Semantic Models
- Design robust and reusable semantic models using star-schema and dimensional modelling principles.
- Define appropriate fact and dimension structures, relationships, hierarchies, and business logic.
- Work with different modelling and storage approaches, including Import, DirectQuery, Composite, and Direct Lake, based on business and technical requirements.
- Ensure models are designed for scalability, performance, and ease of use by report developers and business users.
- Apply sound judgement when deciding between different modelling approaches, including when denormalisation may be appropriate.
- Maintain clear documentation around data models, business logic, KPIs, and reporting definitions.

? DAX & Business Calculations
- Develop and maintain advanced DAX measures, calculated logic, and calculation groups for complex business requirements.
- Build calculations covering areas such as time intelligence, period comparisons, trends, rankings, and business KPIs.
- Apply advanced DAX concepts including filter context,



row context, context transition, CALCULATE, iterators, and variables.
- Review and optimise existing DAX calculations to improve report performance and responsiveness.
- Ensure business calculations are consistent and accurately reflect agreed business definitions and requirements.

? Data Preparation & Transformation
- Work with data from multiple sources and prepare it for reporting using Power Query, SQL, and PySpark.
- Develop and maintain transformation logic required to create reliable and analytics-ready datasets.
- Work with data engineering teams to ensure the availability, quality, and structure of data required for reporting.
- Support the development of curated datasets across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers.
- Work with structured and semi-structured data and ensure it is appropriately prepared for analytical use.
- Identify data quality issues and work with relevant teams to resolve them at the appropriate stage of the data lifecycle.

? Microsoft Fabric & Modern Data Platforms
- Work hands-on with the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem to build and support modern analytics solutions.
- Develop and maintain Fabric components including Lakehouses, Notebooks, Data Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, and Direct Lake semantic models.
- Work with OneLake and curated datasets to support enterprise reporting and analytics.
- Contribute to modern lakehouse-based analytics architecture and the integration of Fabric with Power BI.
- Support the adoption of scalable and reusable approaches to data preparation, modelling, and reporting within the Fabric environment.
- Work closely with data engineering teams to ensure the analytics layer is effectively integrated with the underlying data platform.

? SQL & PySpark
- Develop and optimise SQL queries for reporting and analytical workloads, including working with large datasets.
- Use joins, CTEs, window functions, aggregations, and query optimisation techniques to build productive data solutions.
- Develop and maintain PySpark transformation logic using DataFrame operations, joins, aggregations, and window functions.
- Work with semi-structured data where required and ensure transformation processes are scalable.
- Identify inefficient queries or transformation processes and recommend improvements to enhance overall data processing performance.

? Performance Optimisation
- Take ownership of performance across Power BI reports, semantic models, DAX calculations, data refreshes, and underlying transformation processes.
- Diagnose and resolve issues relating to slow visuals, inefficient DAX, oversized models, long-running refreshes, and inefficient data processing.
- Review model design, query performance, calculations, and refresh processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Use appropriate tools such as DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, ALM Toolkit, and Best Practice Analyzer when analysing and resolving performance issues.
- Establish good development and performance practices that can be adopted across the wider analytics team.

? Power BI Service, Security & Deployment
- Manage and support Power BI environments, including workspaces, gateways, deployment pipelines, datasets, and scheduled refreshes.
- Implement and troubleshoot Row-Level Security (RLS) and workspace access requirements.
- Support the controlled movement of reports and semantic models across development, testing, and production environments.
- Monitor scheduled refreshes and troubleshoot refresh failures, access issues, and dataset-related problems.
- Ensure Power BI solutions follow appropriate security, governance, and deployment practices.
- Support the team in maintaining a consistent and controlled Power BI environment.

? Business Stakeholder Management




- Work directly with business stakeholders to understand their reporting requirements, business challenges, and analytical objectives.
- Translate business requirements into appropriate KPIs, metrics, data models, and reporting solutions.
- Engage with stakeholders throughout the development process to validate requirements and ensure the final solution addresses the underlying business need.
- Proactively challenge requirements where necessary and recommend alternative approaches that provide better scalability, usability, or long-term value.
- Explain technical concepts, data limitations, and solution trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Build strong working relationships with business teams and act as a trusted partner for analytics and reporting requirements.

? Collaboration & Technical Leadership
- Work closely with data engineers, analysts, developers, and business stakeholders to deliver end-to-end analytics solutions.
- Participate in solution design discussions and provide guidance on Power BI, data modelling, DAX, and analytics architecture.
- Review existing development practices and recommend improvements to improve quality, consistency, and maintainability.
- Mentor junior Power BI developers and analysts through code reviews, knowledge sharing, pairing, and problem-solving.
- Contribute to establishing development standards and best practices across Power BI and analytics initiatives.
- Stay current with developments in Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and up-to-date analytics practices and identify opportunities to apply them within projects.

Skills Required

- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and delivering production-grade Power BI solutions, including semantic models, reports, and deployment.
- Strong experience in Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.
- Advanced knowledge of DAX, with practical experience handling complex business calculations and optimising performance.
- Strong understanding of data modelling, dimensional modelling, and star-schema design.
- Hands-on experience with Power Query / M, including transformation, query folding, and incremental refresh.
- Strong SQL experience, particularly working with large datasets and complex queries.
- Hands-on experience with PySpark and data transformation.
- Experience working with Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, OneLake, Data Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, and Direct Lake.
- Strong understanding of Power BI Service administration, workspaces, gateways, RLS, deployment pipelines, and refresh management.
- Experience identifying and resolving Power BI and data platform performance issues.
- Strong understanding of modern data warehousing and analytics concepts.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of analytics solutions from requirement gathering through production.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in simple business terms.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior developers or analysts and contribute to team-wide development practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with a focus on delivering practical business outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Statistics, or a related discipline.
- Experience working with Delta Lake, including schema evolution, time travel, optimisation, and partitioning strategies.
- Experience with Azure Data Factory or Microsoft Fabric Pipelines for data orchestration.
- Exposure to enterprise-scale lakehouse and modern data platform environments.
- Experience working with large and complex datasets in a production analytics environment.
- Microsoft certifications such as PL-300, DP-600, or DP-700 will be an advantage.
