Details
The Nutanix Migration Engineer is the technical executor of the VMware-to-Nutanix transition. The role spans the full migration lifecycle - assessment and sizing, migration design, Nutanix Move 6.0 execution, cutover, validation, troubleshooting, and post-migration stabilization. This is a delivery-focused engineering role: the expectation is independent, hands-on execution inside a production healthcare environment where failed cutovers and extended outages are not recoverable events.
The engineer must be equally comfortable on the VMware source side and the Nutanix target side, because the majority of migration failures originate in the source estate rather than the destination.
Job Requirements
Details
- Perform discovery of the source VMware estate using Nutanix Collector, RVTools, and native vCenter reporting - capturing VM inventory, resource consumption, disk layout, snapshots, VMware Tools state, guest OS versions, and network configuration.
- Analyze workload characteristics to identify migration blockers before scheduling: unsupported guest operating systems, RDMs, shared VMDKs, oversized disks, encrypted VMs, VMs with attached ISOs, static IP dependencies, application clustering, and licensing anchored to hardware identifiers.
- Support target sizing and capacity planning using Nutanix Sizer - validating CPU, memory, storage, and node count against actual measured consumption rather than allocated values.
- Group workloads into migration waves by application dependency, business criticality, downtime tolerance, and owner availability; document per-wave migration approach and rollback plan.
- Produce the migration design and cutover runbook for each wave: pre-checks, sequence, validation steps, back-out procedure,
and named approvers.
- Deploy, configure, and maintain Nutanix Move 6.0 - appliance sizing, source and target workplace registration, credential and permission configuration, and network mapping between source port groups and AHV virtual networks.
- Build and execute migration plans: seed data replication, monitor replication progress and lag, manage bandwidth and concurrency limits, and coordinate cutover timing with application owners.
- Manage guest preparation - VirtIO driver injection for Windows guests, Linux guest readiness, VMware Tools removal, and IP retention or reassignment per the network design.
- Execute cutovers within approved change windows, including final delta sync, source VM shutdown, target power-on, and confirmation of guest boot, network reachability, and service startup.
- Handle migration exceptions where Move is not the right tool - in-guest methods, backup-and-restore migration via the client's backup platform, database-native replication, or rebuild-and-reinstall for legacy or unsupported workloads.
- Execute post-migration validation: guest OS health, VirtIO device and driver state, disk presence and capacity, network and DNS resolution, application service startup, backup job re-registration, and monitoring agent check-in.
- Troubleshoot migration failures across the stack - Move appliance and agent errors,
CBT and snapshot issues, vCenter permission and API failures, source datastore performance limits, boot failures on AHV (UEFI/BIOS mismatch, missing drivers, disk controller changes), and post-cutover network isolation.
- Coordinate application owner validation and formal acceptance sign-off for each migrated workload; drive open defects to closure within the agreed hypercare window.
- Perform post-migration optimization: right-sizing CPU and memory, storage container and compression/dedupe policy alignment, VM affinity rules, and protection policy or replication configuration on the target.
- Decommission source objects only after acceptance and retention criteria are met, following the agreed decommissioning checklist.
- Maintain as-built documentation, migration logs, exception records, and lessons learned; contribute reusable runbook content back to the Stefanini Nutanix practice.
- 5+ years in enterprise virtualization or infrastructure engineering, including 2+ years hands-on with Nutanix in production.
- Demonstrable participation in at least one completed enterprise VMware-to-Nutanix migration - candidates must be able to describe scale, tooling, failure modes encountered, and how they were resolved.
- Required certification: Nutanix Certified Professional - Multicloud Infrastructure (NCP-MCI), current version.
- Preferred: Nutanix Certified Master - Multicloud Infrastructure (NCM-MCI), VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV), Microsoft or Red Hat OS-level certification.
- Experience in a healthcare or other regulated production environment, working within formal change control and maintenance windows.
