Details
The Nutanix Automation Engineer exists to create leverage. Migration at scale and ongoing platform operations both generate large volumes of repetitive, error-prone manual work — pre-migration checks, bulk VM configuration, post-cutover validation, health reporting, provisioning, and configuration drift correction. This role converts that work into scripted, API-driven, version-controlled automation so the migration team moves faster with fewer defects and the support team absorbs more estate without adding heads.
The role is measured in hours removed and errors prevented, not in scripts written.
Migration Automation
- Automate pre-migration discovery and readiness checks — bulk inventory extraction, snapshot and VMware Tools state validation, disk and configuration compatibility screening, and blocker reporting per wave.
- Script bulk operations against Nutanix Move and the Nutanix APIs — migration plan creation, batch VM addition, replication status polling, and progress and exception reporting to the Project Manager.
- Build post-migration validation automation: guest reachability, service and port checks, VirtIO and driver state, disk presence, backup re-registration, and monitoring agent check-in — producing a pass/fail evidence artifact per VM that supports application owner sign-off.
- Automate post-cutover configuration — categories and tags, protection policy assignment, affinity rules, and resource right-sizing recommendations based on measured utilization.
Operational and Platform Automation
- Develop scheduled health and compliance automation — NCC result collection and parsing, cluster resiliency and capacity reporting, snapshot and replication compliance checks, and upgrade-readiness assessment.
- Build self-service and workflow automation for routine requests: VM provisioning from standard templates, resource changes, decommissioning, and access requests, with approval gates preserved.
- Implement event-driven automation using Prism Central Playbooks (X-Play)
or equivalent — automated triage, enrichment, and remediation for well-understood recurring alerts.
- Integrate the Nutanix platform with the client's ITSM and CMDB — automated ticket creation with contextual detail, asset and configuration item synchronization, and closure/status write-back.
- Build operational reporting and dashboards — capacity runway, migration progress, incident and change volume, and platform health trending — for both client leadership and Stefanini governance.
Engineering Practice and Code Quality
- Manage all automation as code in the client's or Stefanini's version control system, with branching, peer review, and change history — no untracked scripts on jump boxes.
- Apply infrastructure-as-code practice where appropriate — Terraform Nutanix provider or Ansible collections for repeatable, declarative configuration of clusters, categories, networks, and VMs.
- Implement protected automation design: idempotency, dry-run and reporting-only modes, explicit confirmation for destructive operations, structured logging, and error handling that fails loudly rather than silently.
- Handle credentials and secrets correctly — no embedded passwords or API keys; integrate with the client's approved secrets management and service account model, with least-privilege scoping.
- Document every automation asset: purpose, prerequisites, parameters, expected output, failure modes, and rollback, so ownership can transfer without the original author.
- Contribute reusable, client-agnostic automation assets back to the Stefanini Nutanix practice library, accelerating the next engagement.

Scripting and development
PowerShell and Python at a production level — modules/functions, error handling, parameterization, structured output (JSON/CSV), and REST consumption
Nutanix APIs and tooling
Nutanix REST APIs (v3 and v4), Prism Central Playbooks (X-Play), Nutanix Self-Service (Calm) blueprints where deployed, Move API/CLI
Nutanix platform
AOS, AHV, Prism Element and Prism Central concepts sufficient to automate safely — categories, storage containers, protection policies, VM lifecycle
Infrastructure as code
Terraform (Nutanix provider) and/or Ansible (nutanix.ncp collection); familiarity with state management and drift detection
Version control and CI/CD
Git with peer review workflow; pipeline execution via Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins
Integration
ServiceNow or equivalent ITSM APIs, CMDB synchronization, monitoring/alerting integration, webhook and event-driven patterns
Security practice
Least-privilege service accounts, approved secrets management, audit logging, and change-controlled automation execution
Qualifications And Certifications
- 4+ years in infrastructure automation, DevOps, or platform engineering, including 2+ years automating Nutanix or a comparable enterprise virtualization platform.
- Portfolio evidence required — candidates should be able to walk through automation they authored, explain the design decisions, and describe how failure cases were handled.
- Preferred certifications: Nutanix Certified Professional – Multicloud Infrastructure (NCP-MCI), HashiCorp Certified Terraform Associate, Red Hat Certified Engineer or Ansible Automation certification, Microsoft PowerShell-relevant certification.
- Experience automating within a regulated environment where change control, auditability, and separation of duties constrain how automation is authorized and executed.
