Mechanical Engineer Steel Melting Shop (SMS)

Role & Responsibilities

- Plan, execute, and monitor preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance of mechanical equipment in the Steel Melting Shop Induction Furnace, EOT/HOT Cranes, Ladle Refractory Systems, Charging System, and Casting/CCM area equipment.
- Ensure trouble-free operation of induction furnace mechanical systems furnace tilting mechanism, hydraulic power packs, coil & panel cooling systems, furnace body, and refractory lining support structure.
- Carry out maintenance, inspection, and load testing of EOT/HOT cranes, including wire ropes, hoisting mechanisms, gearboxes, brakes, wheels, and rail alignment as per statutory requirements.
- Plan and execute crane trolley/CT and long travel (LT) motion maintenance, including gearbox oil analysis and coupling alignment.
- Coordinate ladle car, ladle turret, and ladle refractory handling equipment maintenance to ensure smooth tapping and casting operations.
- Troubleshoot mechanical breakdowns in real-time during melting/casting operations and take quick corrective action to minimize heat loss/downtime.
- Carry out condition monitoring (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis) on furnace and crane systems to predict failures before they occur.
- Plan and supervise shutdown/overhaul activities for induction furnace relining, crane major overhauls, and CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) mechanical systems.
- Ensure proper functioning of hydraulic and pneumatic systems associated with furnace tilting, mould oscillation, and ladle mechanisms.
- Maintain equipment history cards, breakdown analysis, and RCA (Root Cause Analysis) reports for major failures.
- Plan and control critical spares inventory (crane wire ropes, furnace coils, hydraulic cylinders, gearboxes) to avoid production loss.
- Ensure strict compliance with safety standards — permit-to-work, LOTO, crane safety checklists, working at height, and molten metal handling precautions.

- Coordinate with electrical, instrumentation, refractory, and production teams for integrated shutdown planning and breakdown resolution.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce MTTR, breakdown frequency, and improve crane/furnace availability and OEE.
- Liaise with OEMs/vendors for furnace coil rewinding, crane inspection certification, and spares/technical support.
- Ensure documentation of maintenance job cards, statutory crane inspection records, and shutdown reports.
- Train and guide technicians and junior engineers on secure crane operation, furnace maintenance, and emergency handling.

Preferred Candidate Profile
- BE/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
- 3–10 years of relevant maintenance experience in a Steel Melting Shop (Induction Furnace/EAF-based) in a steel plant or foundry.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of induction furnace mechanical systems — tilting mechanism, hydraulics, coil cooling, and panel systems.
- Sound working knowledge of EOT/HOT crane maintenance — hoisting mechanism, wire ropes, brakes, gearboxes, and statutory load testing requirements.
- Experience in ladle handling systems, ladle car/turret maintenance, and refractory-related mechanical issues.
- Familiarity with CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) mechanical systems — mould oscillation, withdrawal unit, and secondary cooling — is an added advantage.
- Working knowledge of predictive maintenance tools (vibration analyzers, thermography guns, oil analysis).
- Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to take quick, safe decisions during breakdowns in a high-temperature/molten metal environment.
- Knowledge of statutory crane inspection requirements (Factory Act, DGMS, or equivalent) and safety compliance.
- Good coordination skills to work with cross-functional teams (production, electrical, refractory, safety).
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts and be available for emergency breakdowns.
- Exposure to CMMS/SAP-PM for maintenance planning and spares management preferred.
