Our client is a large, listed building materials company — a leading player in tiles and surfaces — entering a defined phase of transformation spanning brand repositioning toward premium, design-led categories, portfolio renewal, digital-first demand generation and a sharper, insight-driven go-to-market.
The Chief Marketing Officer will own the complete product and brand lifecycle — from identifying the market opportunity, through launch, to sustained in-market performance — ensuring every product introduced not only lands well but keeps earning its place in the portfolio. This leader partners directly with the MD & CEO and the Commercial and Operations organisations, and reports into the Board on brand health, portfolio performance and marketing ROI.
This is a rare marketing mandate: full ownership of the demand engine, genuine authority over the product portfolio, direct Board exposure, and the opportunity to reposition one of the category's most recognised brands.
ROLE MANDATE
Own the end-to-end marketing and product lifecycle engine — insight, portfolio strategy, innovation pipeline, launch, brand, pricing, demand generation and in-market performance management — and build the marketing organisation, processes and analytics needed to drive premium, profitable growth at scale.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Lifecycle Ownership — Launch to Performance
- Own the full product lifecycle: prospect identification, concept validation, business case, launch execution, post-launch tracking and end-of-life/rationalisation decisions
- Run a disciplined stage-gate launch process with clear success metrics defined before launch — sell-in, sell-through, price realisation, contribution margin
- Track in-market performance of every launch through a structured review cadence; intervene early with pricing,
positioning, channel or product corrections when a launch underperforms
- Continuously prune and renew the portfolio so growth comes from products that perform, not from SKU proliferation
Brand & Premium Repositioning
- Lead the repositioning of the brand toward premium, design-led categories with a clear architecture across ranges, price points and sub-brands
- Build brand salience and consideration among architects, interior designers, developers and end consumers
- Own brand health metrics and report them to the Board with the same rigour as financial metrics
Insight, Innovation & Portfolio Strategy
- Institutionalise consumer, influencer and channel insight as the starting point for every portfolio decision
- Partner with Design and R&D; to build a rolling innovation pipeline aligned to margin and premiumisation goals
- Own category and pricing strategy — price laddering, mix management and realisation — in partnership with Sales and Finance
Demand Generation & Digital
- Own integrated demand generation across ATL, digital, performance marketing, social, CRM and D2C/e-commerce
- Build a measurable, ROI-accountable marketing engine — attribution, funnel analytics, marketing mix optimisation
- Digitise the dealer, architect and consumer journey — from discovery and visualisation tools to lead management and post-purchase experience
Channel & Trade Marketing
- Drive channel marketing, retail identity, in-store experience and display excellence across dealers, franchise stores and company showrooms in lockstep with the Sales organisation
- Build influencer programs (architects, designers, contractors, masons) as a durable demand moat
- Equip the channel with launch toolkits, training and merchandising that make every launch land consistently nationwide
Leadership & Talent
- Build a modern, insight-led, digitally fluent marketing organisation with clear accountability for commercial outcomes
- Develop leadership capability and succession depth across brand, product, digital and trade marketing
- Act as strategic thought partner to the MD & CEO and the Board on brand, portfolio, pricing and growth investments
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE — FIRST 12 MONTHS
- A full-lifecycle product management framework — stage-gate launches, in-market performance dashboards, portfolio review cadence — institutionalised and Board-visible
- Brand repositioning strategy approved and in execution, with early evidence of movement in brand health and premium mix
- At least two to three launches taken through the complete cycle — launched on time, tracked against pre-agreed metrics, and corrected or scaled based on performance
- A measurable lift in marketing ROI — demonstrated through improved lead quality, launch success rate, price realisation or premium category contribution
- A strengthened marketing leadership bench across at least two critical roles
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Must Have
- 18+ years of progressive marketing and product leadership, including at least 8 years in senior roles owning brand, portfolio and demand outcomes at scale
- A proven, quantifiable track record of managing the complete product lifecycle — from launch through in-market performance management, correction and portfolio renewal — with commercial accountability
- Demonstrated success in brand building or repositioning, ideally toward premium or design-led segments
- Strong digital and analytics fluency — performance marketing, D2C, marketing ROI measurement
- Direct experience presenting to and operating with Boards, promoters and investors
- MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification from a recognised institution
Preferred Background
- Building materials, ceramics, tiles, sanitaryware, paints, plywood/laminates, lighting, consumer durables, home improvement or comparable design-led, channel-driven businesses with both B2B influencer and consumer dynamics
Leadership Competencies
- Enterprise marketing leadership with strong commercial and financial acumen — a P&L; mindset, not a campaign mindset
- Fluency across brand strategy, product management, pricing, digital marketing and channel/trade marketing
- A data-driven, insight-led operator who defines success metrics upfront and holds launches accountable to them
- High integrity, bias for action, and the maturity to partner closely with the MD & CEO, Sales and Operations while constructively challenging the status quo
