1. Job Purpose
To ensure the smooth, hygienic, safe, and efficient operation of the school mess/cafeteria, providing nutritious and quality food while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, discipline, food safety, and service.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the day-to-day functioning of the school mess and kitchen.
- Ensure timely preparation and serving of meals, snacks, and beverages as per the approved menu.
- Maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, cleanliness, and safety.
- Supervise mess staff, allocate duties, monitor attendance, discipline, grooming, and work performance.
- Ensure all mess staff follow proper hygiene practices, including clean uniforms, gloves, hairnets, and personal cleanliness.
- Monitor the quality and freshness of raw materials and ensure proper storage of food items.
- Check stock levels and maintain proper records of food items, groceries, consumables, and kitchen supplies.
- Ensure FIFO/FEFO practices for storage and usage of food materials.
- Coordinate procurement and ensure materials are purchased as per approved requirements.
- Monitor portion sizes and minimize food wastage.
- Ensure proper cleaning and sanitization of kitchen, utensils, equipment, dining areas, and storage areas.
- Ensure safe handling of LPG/gas, electrical equipment, kitchen machinery, and other kitchen utilities.
- Maintain records related to food preparation, stock, cleaning, pest control, maintenance, and other required inspections.
- Ensure that expired, spoiled, contaminated, or substandard food items are not used or served.
- Coordinate with the Administration regarding repairs, maintenance, pest control, and other mess-related requirements.
- Address complaints related to food quality, service, hygiene, or staff behaviour and report serious matters to the management.
- Ensure that all mess staff maintain professional, respectful, and appropriate behaviour with students, staff, vendors, and colleagues.
- Ensure compliance with applicable school policies and food-safety requirements.
- Immediately report any food safety concern, accident, illness, shortage, or other reliable incident to the appropriate authority.
- Perform any other mess-related duties assigned by the Principal / Administrative Officer.
3. Staff Supervision
The Mess In-Charge shall be responsible for effective supervision and coordination of all mess personnel, including cooks, helpers, cleaners, and other assigned staff.
4. Required Skills & Competencies
- Good knowledge of kitchen and mess operations.
- Knowledge of food hygiene and safe food handling.
- Ability to supervise and manage support staff effectively.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of stock and inventory management.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare basic reports.
- Strong sense of cleanliness, discipline, responsibility, and punctuality.
- Ability to handle emergencies and resolve operational issues promptly.
5. Accountability
The Mess In-Charge is accountable for the overall cleanliness, hygiene, food quality, safety, discipline, inventory, and smooth functioning of the school mess and shall ensure that the mess operates in accordance with school standards and instructions.
Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹45,000.00 per month
