Vadodara

A US growth-stage climate infrastructure startup building and scaling electrolyzer systems for carbon removal and green hydrogen production. Having successfully deployed large-scale pilot systems, the company is now transitioning into commercial manufacturing and is establishing its production capability in India. The current phase focuses on industrialising electrolyzer hardware - driving design-for-manufacturing (DFM), cost reduction, supplier development, and scalable production of complex, multi-material electrochemical systems, with a strong focus on translating prototypes into manufacturable, scalable designs. This is a hands-on engineering and manufacturing build-out environment.

Mechanical Design Engineering Lead - Electrolyzer Systems

Based in Vadodara, Gujarat

About the role

This role is specifically suited for candidates with direct, hands-on experience in electrolyzer stack design and development (PEM and/or Alkaline). Candidates with adjacent experience (fuel cells, hydrogen systems, BoP only, or chemical process equipment) will be considered only if they also demonstrate robust mechanical design capability and a clear understanding of electrolyzer stack architecture. The role focuses on leading the design and development of the physical hardware of next-generation electrolyzer systems, with particular emphasis on the electrolyzer stack itself – including cell design, bipolar plates, MEA integration, sealing systems, stack assembly, and structural packaging. You will translate early-stage lab-scale prototypes into robust, scalable, and manufacturable products. You will work at the intersection of mechanical design and real-world deployment, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams - including chemical and electrochemical engineers - to bring complex systems from concept through to production. The position requires a hands-on, technically strong individual who can iterate rapidly,

optimize designs for performance and cost, and operate effectively in a fast-paced, experimental environment with high levels of ambiguity.

Responsibilities:

- Lead the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for advanced hardware systems, with a primary focus on the electrolyzer stack (cell design, bipolar plates, MEA integration, sealing, stack assembly, and structural packaging).
- Translate early-stage prototypes into scalable, functional, and manufacturable designs
- Develop and refine prototypes through iterative design cycles, from proof-of-concept to production-ready solutions
- Optimize designs for performance, manufacturability (DFM), ease of assembly, and cost efficiency
- Conduct testing using experimental and simulation methods to validate performance under various conditions
- Analyse test results and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system design
- Prepare detailed engineering documentation and specifications for manufacturing and production
- Work closely with suppliers and manufacturers to ensure successful execution of designs
- Contribute to the development of next-generation systems through continuous innovation and improvement
- Act as a foundational/pioneer engineering hire, helping establish engineering standards, design workflows, and technical best practices as the team scales
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to future engineers and cross-functional team members as the engineering function expands

Requirements:

- Degree in Mechanical Engineering,

Industrial Design, or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design of parts and assemblies, with at least 2–3 years specifically in electrolyzer stack design (PEM and/or Alkaline)
- Direct, hands-on experience designing and developing electrolyzer stacks – including cell design, bipolar plates, MEA integration, sealing systems, stack assembly, and structural packaging
- Experience working with suppliers and manufacturers to bring designs into production
- Strong knowledge of materials, including metals, polymers, and common alloys, with specific awareness of materials used in electrochemical environments (corrosion resistance, hydrogen compatibility, sealing materials)
- Familiarity with a range of manufacturing and prototyping processes
- Proficiency in CAD and CAM tools
- Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and mechanics of materials
- Ability to operate hands-on in a fast-paced, iterative development environment
- Proactive, self-driven mindset with the ability to solve open-ended problems

Nice-to-haves:

- Demonstrated potential to grow into a technical leadership role within a scaling engineering organisation
- Experience designing parts for chemical processes
- Experience with power electronics
- Modelling experience (FEA, CFD)
- Passion for carbon management solutions
- Comfort with working in cross-functional teams across jurisdictions

Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
