We are hiring on behalf of our client for the deputation of a Utilities Engineer at a project site in Japan. The initial deputation is for 6 months, with a strong possibility of extension based on the candidate’s performance.

On Site: Tatebayashi, Japan
Relevant Experience: 15+ Years (Factory Utilities Projects)
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced and results-driven Utilities Engineer to lead utility and process improvement projects across manufacturing facilities. The successful candidate will act as the technical authority and customer representative, driving utility-related projects from concept development and need identification through execution, commissioning, and project closure.
The role requires strong expertise in industrial utilities, process optimization, energy management, water conservation, and capacity enhancement initiatives within food, dairy, FMCG, or process manufacturing environments.
The role requires strong expertise industrial utilities such as Steam generation and distribution; boiler efficiency; condensate recovery; hot water systems; refrigeration, ammonia/glycol/chilled water systems; cooling water; compressed air; process water recovery, process water, WWTP. Expertise in utilities in Dairy/ Foods/ FMCG industries.
Key Responsibilities
Utilities & Process Engineering
- Able to drive utilities projects as customer representation from need definition to the project closure.
- Assess, optimize, and troubleshoot plant utility systems to improve efficiency, reliability, sustainability, and operational performance.
- Develop utility master plans and identify opportunities for debottlenecking and capacity expansion.
- Build, analyze, and challenge energy and utility balances using real factory operational data.
- Evaluate and improve:
- Steam generation and distribution systems
- Boiler efficiency and condensate recovery systems
- Hot water generation and distribution
- Refrigeration systems (Ammonia, Glycol, Chilled Water)
- Cooling water systems
- Compressed air systems
- Process water and water recovery systems
- Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP)
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders, engineering teams, contractors, and suppliers.
- Ensure project objectives are achieved in terms of safety, quality, cost, schedule, and performance.
Communication, Presence and Leadership Requirements
- Fluent skilled English, written and spoken, with the ability to prepare concise technical reports and senior-level summaries (Japanese is an advantage).
- Strong executive presence and gravitas; credible with Plant Directors, Operations Directors, Engineering leaders and senior stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills; able to challenge established factory practices constructively using data and process fundamentals.
- Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear business implications: capacity, cost, quality, yield, energy, water, food safety, risk and delivery.
- Strong coaching capability; able to transfer know-how to colleagues and project teams and build capability rather than only issuing recommendations.
- Comfortable working in ambiguous factory situations where data may be incomplete and alignment may initially be low.
- International exposure highly desirable; experience across countries,
cultures and different factory maturity levels is a strong advantage.
- High willingness to work in Japan and spend significant time on the factory floor.
- Challenge existing factory practices using engineering principles and data analysis.
- Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions.
- Provide coaching and technical mentoring to plant and project teams.
- Support operational teams in achieving performance and sustainability targets.
Required Technical Experience Candidates must demonstrate proven experience in:
- Factory utility management and optimization.
- Utilities capacity increase and debottlenecking projects.
- Significant energy reduction initiatives.
- Water conservation and recovery projects.
- Utility cost reduction programs.
- Process engineering and manufacturing facility improvements.
- Management of utility systems across multiple manufacturing sites.
- Greenfield and brownfield project execution.
- Engineering calculations, process simulations, and performance assessments.
- Development of technical specifications and tender documents.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Engineering Degree (Mechanical / Chemical / Process / Dairy / Food)
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Energy Management / Sustainability Certifications
- PMP or equivalent Project Management Certification
Preferred Experience
- Experience working across multiple factories and countries.
- Exposure to FMCG, Dairy, Food & Beverage, or Process Industries.
- International project experience.
- Experience working in diverse cultural environments.
- Japanese language proficiency is an advantage.
