Role & responsibilities
Senior Software Engineer Full-Stack (Python + Next.js), Geospatial Platform
Engineering Delivery
- Build the geospatial cost-intelligence module for UtiliSphere, computing real-time predicted locate costs from GIS analysis at the moment a ticket arrives.
- Develop automated auditing of contractor invoices against those cost predictions.
- Build and operate an event-driven Python backend — FastAPI workers and APIs over PostgreSQL/PostGIS — integrating cleanly with an existing SQL Server platform.
- Build the Next.js (App Router) front end for the module, including data-grid/table experiences for reviewing predictions and audit results.
- Read and integrate with the existing SQL Server schema through narrow, well-defined integration seams (read-only reference data, a transactional outbox) while resisting unnecessary coupling to the legacy estate.
- Keep calculation logic pure and dependency-injected, and write the test before trusting the number, given that this system computes figures customers are billed against.
- Use Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex as a daily-driver part of the workflow for code generation, review, test authoring, and research — critically reviewing and correcting AI output rather than treating it as automatically correct.
- Write and maintain automated tests as a habit: pytest, property-based/table-driven tests, Playwright (or similar) E2E coverage, and testing against golden datasets.
- Engage constructively in code review, giving and receiving feedback clearly and in writing.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- 6–8 years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years building Python backends in production and real, shipped React/Next.js work.
- Strong Python 3.x (typing, async/await, packaging) and working knowledge of TypeScript.
- FastAPI (or a comparable async framework), Pydantic, REST with OpenAPI-first contracts, and SQLAlchemy 2.x.
- React + Next.js (App Router), with TanStack Query/Table or equivalent data-grid experience.
- PostgreSQL (schema design, migrations, query tuning)
and working knowledge of SQL Server / T-SQL.
- Practical exposure to geospatial tooling — PostGIS, shapely/GEOS, pyproj, or GDAL — or demonstrable computational-geometry aptitude with the willingness to go deep fast.
- Experience with event-driven systems: queue/outbox patterns, idempotent consumers, at-least-once processing, and background workers.
- A genuine testing habit — pytest, property-based/table-driven testing, Playwright or similar E2E, and testing against golden datasets.
- Daily-driver fluency with Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex — real delivery experience, not a demo — including effective prompting, iterating with an agent, and critically reviewing AI output.
- Working knowledge of auth and security basics: JWT/OAuth-style flows, session handling, and secure cookie practices.
- Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and disciplined Git branching and PR review practices.
- Excellent written and spoken English — clear specs, transparent prompts, clear PR descriptions.
- Correctness instincts for money-adjacent code, and comfort integrating with a legacy estate without coupling to it unnecessarily.
NICE TO HAVE
- GIS/mapping domain depth — spatial indexing, geodesic vs. planar measurement, coordinate systems/projections, vector tiles (MapLibre), or utility/811 damage-prevention domain exposure.
- ML exposure — gradient-boosted models (LightGBM/XGBoost), scikit-learn, and model evaluation discipline.
- Observability experience — OpenTelemetry, structured logging, SLO-driven alerting.
- Data-heavy UI experience — virtualized grids at tens of thousands of rows, file-upload UX, SSE/streaming progress.
- Azure exposure — App Service/containers, Key Vault, managed Postgres.
- Experience standing up a new service beside a monolith while keeping the boundary clean.
EDUCATION
- B.E. / B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering or Electronics & Communications Engineering, OR BCA + MCA (Bachelor's + Master's in Computer Applications). Equivalent degrees in a related computing discipline are considered — demonstrated, hands-on engineering ability carries the most weight
