Job Title: Roastery & Sensory Consultant
Job Overview: We are seeking an experienced Roastery & Sensory Consultant to optimise our coffee production across both our speciality and commercial product lines. In this dual-focused role, you will bridge the gap between high-volume operational efficiency and artisanal flavour precision. You will design scalable roast profiles, lead our quality control (QC) and sensory programmes, and mentor our production team to ensure peak freshness and flavour consistency across every batch.
Key Responsibilities: Roastery Operations & Profile Design
- Develop and optimize roast curves for micro-lots, single-origins, and high-volume commercial blends.
- Translate complex thermodynamic data from roasting software (e.g., Cropster, Artisan) into repeatable production recipes.
- Consult on green coffee sourcing by analyzing physical green metrics (moisture, density, screen size) to predict roast behavior.
- Audit production workflows to maximize throughput while minimizing gas, energy, and physical bean waste.
Sensory Analysis & Quality Control
- Establish rigorous QC protocols to evaluate consistency between small-sample roasts and large commercial batches.
- Lead daily cupping panels to grade coffees, detect roast defects (baked, underdeveloped, scorched), and sign off on production releases.
- Manage the sensory database, tracking color metrics (Agtron numbers), moisture loss, and extraction yield data over time.
- Design proprietary blend components that maintain flavor targets even during seasonal crop transitions.
Training & Workforce Development
- Train roastery staff on machine safety, airflow mechanics, conduction/convection heat transfers, and preventive maintenance.
- Calibrate production and cafe teams on sensory vocabulary using the SCA Flavor Wheel protocols.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 1 years of hands-on commercial roasting experience handling batches from 5kg up to 60 kg+.
- Certifications: an active licensed Q-Grader credential or advanced Speciality Coffee Association (SCA) Roasting/Sensory diplomas are highly preferred.
- Software Mastery: Deep proficiency in Cropster Roastery Management or Artisan Scope.
- Adaptability: Proven ability to pivot mindset quickly between premium speciality scoring (80+ points) and cost-engineered commercial blending.
- Physical Ability: stand for long periods in a production workplace.
Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹45,000.00 per month
Ability to commute/relocate
- Somvarpet, Karnataka (Somvarpet): Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
License/Certification:
- Q grader certificate from coffee quality institute (Required)
- Q Grader Certificate from the Specialty Coffee Association (Required)
- Coffee roasting Master class (Required)
Willingness to travel:
- 25% (Required)
Work Location: In person
