Role Summary

As a Lead IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a key role in driving cloud transformation initiatives within the Cloud Services team at Staples. The Cloud Services team provides 24x7 operational support for Staples' cloud infrastructure, ensuring the stability, scalability, availability, and security of critical platforms.

The ideal candidate will have solid hands-on experience managing public cloud infrastructure across Azure, AWS, or GCP, combined with solid Linux system administration skills and experience with infrastructure automation using Ansible or Puppet. Experience supporting production environments, Kubernetes platforms, cloud migrations, monitoring, incident management, and infrastructure automation is highly desirable.

This role requires a seasoned infrastructure professional who can troubleshoot complex production issues, drive automation and continuous improvement, collaborate across engineering teams, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Staples' cloud technology ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide 24x7 operational support for Staples' cloud infrastructure and participate in the on-call rotation.
- Manage and support cloud infrastructure across Azure, AWS, or GCP, ensuring availability, performance, scalability, and security.
- Perform Linux system administration, including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, troubleshooting, and security remediation.
- Automate infrastructure and operating system activities such as OS/security patching, configuration management, and routine operational tasks using Ansible or Puppet.
- Support Kubernetes platforms, including AKS, GKE, or EKS, with a focus on cluster operations, maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
- Implement and maintain infrastructure availability, health, and performance monitoring to ensure platform reliability and uptime.
- Support and contribute to cloud migration initiatives, including their impact on infrastructure, networking, security, and operational processes.
- Drive production readiness through the Permit to Operate (PTO) process for applications migrating to public cloud environments.




- Collaborate with Cloud Engineers, Cloud Architects, SRE, Development, Release Engineering, and Database teams to support implementations and production deployments.
- Drive infrastructure simplification, standardization, automation, and continuous improvement across cloud operations.
- Troubleshoot complex cloud infrastructure, Linux, networking, and security issues and recommend effective solutions.
- Work with Incident and Problem Management teams and cloud service providers to drive timely root cause analysis (RCA) and resolution of high-priority incidents.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge management resources for the Cloud Services team and its partners.
- Generate governance, compliance, availability, and operational reports for management as required.
- Research emerging cloud technologies and recommend approaches for addressing complex and challenging cloud operational requirements.

Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

- 810 years of experience in IT infrastructure, cloud infrastructure, systems administration, or related technology operations.
- Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in each of the following areas, with experience potentially gained concurrently:
- Linux system administration, including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and troubleshooting.
- At least one public cloud platform: Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Infrastructure automation/configuration management using Ansible or Puppet.
- Supporting business-critical production systems in a 24x7/on-call environment.

Basic Qualifications




- Solid hands-on experience with Linux system administration in enterprise production environments.
- Strong experience with at least one major public cloud platform: Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Hands-on experience with Ansible or Puppet for infrastructure automation and configuration management.
- Experience supporting and troubleshooting Kubernetes environments, such as AKS, GKE, or EKS.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure monitoring, availability, and performance management.
- Experience troubleshooting infrastructure networking and security technologies, including:

- DNS

- Load balancing

- Firewalls

- TCP/IP and network connectivity
- Routing and related infrastructure components
- Experience working in a production environment with 24x7 support and on-call responsibilities.
- Strong troubleshooting, incident management, problem management, and RCA skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Cloud Engineering, SRE, Development, Release Engineering, Security, and Database teams.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CI/CD technologies, such as Jenkins.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience supporting cloud migration and transformation initiatives.
- Experience with cloud governance, security, and compliance.
- Experience with open-source middleware and database technologies such as Apache, Tomcat, NGINX, Node.js, Couchbase, or similar technologies.
- Experience working with SRE practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Relevant cloud or Kubernetes certifications such as Azure, AWS, GCP, CKA, or CKAD.
