About the Role
We are looking for a Battery Design Engineer to lead the design, development and optimization of lithium-ion battery systems for EV, energy storage and second-life applications. The role will focus on battery pack design, cost optimization, aesthetics, safety, manufacturability, innovation and product development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop complete lithium-ion battery packs, modules and battery systems for EV, energy storage and second-life applications.
- Develop battery architecture, cell configuration, module/pack structure, enclosure, busbars, connectors and component layouts.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings and BOMs for battery components and systems.
- Design battery enclosures and mechanical structures considering safety, vibration, shock, IP protection, weight and durability.
- Integrate BMS, electrical architecture, HV components and thermal management systems into battery pack design.
- Optimize battery design for cost, performance, weight, aesthetics, reliability and manufacturability.
- Drive design-to-cost and value engineering initiatives without compromising safety or product performance.
- Develop aesthetically appealing and application-specific battery pack designs while maintaining engineering and manufacturing requirements.
- Support prototype development, testing, validation and troubleshooting of battery systems.
- Ensure battery designs comply with AIS-156 and applicable safety, automotive and battery standards.
- Conduct or support design reviews, DFMEA, risk assessment and design validation activities.
- Work closely with R&D;, Production, Quality, Procurement, suppliers and manufacturing partners for product development.
- Develop innovative solutions for battery refurbishment, repurposing and second-life applications.
- Research emerging battery technologies, materials, cooling technologies and design concepts for continuous product improvement.
- Identify innovation and patent opportunities arising from battery design and R&D; activities and support technical documentation for IP filing.
- Manage engineering changes, design revisions, technical specifications and other product development documentation.
- Support continuous improvement of existing battery products based on field feedback, testing and manufacturing learnings.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of experience in battery pack design, EV batteries, energy storage or related product development.
- Robust knowledge of lithium-ion cells, battery pack architecture and battery design principles.
- Hands-on experience with SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, NX or similar 3D CAD software.
- Good understanding of BMS, HV electrical systems and battery thermal management.
- Knowledge of battery testing, validation, thermal behaviour, cell degradation and safety.
- Working knowledge of AIS-156 and relevant battery/automotive standards.
- Understanding of DFM, DFA, DFMEA, materials and battery manufacturing processes.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical and product-development skills.
- Cost-conscious and innovation-driven approach with a focus on design optimization and commercialization.
- Exposure to battery refurbishment, second-life applications or patent development will be an added advantage.
