Industry: Integrated Steel Plant
Role Purpose
To manage technical services for the Hot Strip Mill, ensuring stable process performance, product quality, yield improvement, and continuous optimization of HSM operations. The role will focus on process monitoring, technical problem-solving, quality improvement, process control, and coordination with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and downstream functions.
Key Responsibilities
HSM Process & Technical Services
- Lead technical services activities for the Hot Strip Mill, covering process monitoring, optimization, and technical support to operations.
- Monitor critical HSM process parameters and identify deviations impacting productivity, quality, yield, and energy consumption.
- Analyse process data and develop corrective actions for recurring process and product-quality issues.
- Provide technical support to Production for stable and efficient mill operation.
- Drive process standardization and ensure adherence to defined operating practices.
- Review and optimize rolling schedules, process parameters, and operating practices based on product mix and grade requirements.
- Support trials for new steel grades, new products, and process modifications.
Quality & Product Development
- Work closely with Quality and Production teams to improve surface quality, dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, shape, and yield.
- Analyse quality defects and lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and corrective/preventive actions.
- Support development and industrialization of new products and grades in HSM.
- Monitor customer complaints and support technical analysis and corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain process and product quality standards.
Process Optimization & Yield Improvement
- Identify opportunities for improvement in yield,
productivity, energy consumption, mill utilization, and operating costs.
- Drive technical projects aimed at reducing process losses, cobbles, crop losses, scale losses, and rejection.
- Monitor process KPIs and benchmark performance against internal and industry standards.
- Use statistical analysis and process data to identify improvement opportunities.
Process Control & Automation
- Coordinate with Automation and Instrumentation teams for optimization of process control systems.
- Support implementation and improvement of Level-1/Level-2 automation, process models, data analytics, and digital solutions.
- Ensure availability and accuracy of process data for technical analysis and decision-making.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with Production, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical & Automation, Quality, Projects, and R&D;/Technology teams.
- Provide technical inputs for equipment modifications and process improvement projects.
- Participate in shutdown planning and identify technical requirements for process stabilization and improvement.
Team Management
- Lead and mentor engineers and technical personnel within HSM TSD.
- Allocate responsibilities and monitor completion of technical studies and improvement initiatives.
- Build technical capability through knowledge sharing, training, and structured problem-solving.
Reporting & Documentation
- Monitor and report key HSM technical KPIs.
- Prepare technical reports, RCA reports, trial reports, process studies, and improvement project documentation.
- Maintain process databases, operating standards, technical specifications, and best-practice documents.
Educational Qualification
- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgy / Mechanical / Production Engineering.
- M.Tech/M.E. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Process Engineering, or related field will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 10–15 years of experience in Hot Strip Mill / Rolling Mill technical services, process technology, production, or quality.
- Strong hands-on experience in HSM operations and process optimization in an integrated steel plant.
- Exposure to flat products, process metallurgy, rolling technology, and new product development will be preferred.
