They handle critical groundwork, from equipment setup to patient transport. [1, 2, 3, 4]Core ResponsibilitiesThe day-to-day duties of an OT Technician are typically broken down into three main phases: [1, 2]1. Pre-operative (Before Surgery):
Theatre Setup: Prepare the operating room and arrange sterile surgical instruments, drapes, and consumable trays according to the specific surgery scheduled. [1, 2]
Equipment Check: Ensure all biomedical devices—such as anesthesia machines, C-arm machines, monitors, and lights—are functional and sterilized. [1, 2]
Patient Preparation: Assist in safely shifting and positioning the patient on the operating table based on the surgeon's requirements. [1, 2]
Intra-operative (During Surgery):
Surgical Assistance: Hand sterile instruments, sutures,
and supplies to the surgeon and scrub nurse during the procedure.
Monitoring: Assist the anesthetist in monitoring patient vitals, managing intravenous fluids, and administering medications.
Safety & Counts: Strictly enforce infection control guidelines and perform counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to prevent retained foreign objects. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Post-operative (After Surgery):
Cleanup & Sterilization: Disinfect the operating room post-surgery and operate autoclave machines to clean, pack, and sterilize surgical tools for the next procedure. [1, 2]
