WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.
You own the mechanical engineering of the machines and the team that builds them. You'll work on requirements, mechanism design, analysis, integration, acoustics, production, and test, and you'll hire and mentor the mechanical team.
In This Role You Will
Define requirements where none exist. Translate posture, pressure and use cases into forces, strokes, stiffness, acoustic and duty-cycle targets.
Design mechanisms yourself — linkage synthesis, powertrain selection and sizing from first principles.
Own the analysis chain:



hand calculation first, then FEA for stress, deflection, fatigue life and modal response.
Integrate actuators, sensing and PCBAs into moving assemblies alongside electronics, firmware and controls.
Design for silence. Gear mesh, resonance, isolation, damping — to a target of {sub-30 dBA at one metre}.
Take designs into production: material and process selection, DFM/DFA, first articles, jigs and fixtures, vendor qualification.
Own test and evaluation — life-cycle rigs, load and safety validation, envelope-edge testing — and close the loop back into design.
Release designs properly: GD&T;, tolerance stack-ups, PDM, ECR flow, and MBD as SKU count grows.
Hire, lead and mentor the mechanical team.
