Cross-Platform Desktop App Engineer (Windows + macOS) — Contractor/Consultant

What we’re building

- We’re building a desktop app that acts like an operating layer for your computer
- The system should accept input from user and execute real work across applications and files: open local files, navigate folders, place the cursor, select text, copy/paste, trigger app actions/shortcuts, and coordinate workflows across desktop and browser.
- Core principle: background execution with minimal UI movement/disruption. Prefer APIs/integrations; use UI driving only when necessary.

Responsibilities

- Design and implement cross-platform desktop control capabilities for Windows and macOS: open/search/select files and folders; launch apps; manage windows/focus.
- Implement text editing and input primitives: caret placement, selection, insertion, clipboard management, keystrokes and shortcuts.
- Build an internal ‘action execution’ API (automation primitives) that higher-level agent logic can call.
- Automation strategy preference order: (1) native app/OS APIs where possible, (2) OS accessibility frameworks / scripting, (3) UI automation / browser automation as a
- fallback.
- Implement browser automation where useful (navigation, extraction,



form fill) while minimizing user-visible robot UI movement unless required.
- Build reliability: timeouts, retries, idempotency, state detection (wrong window/focus), and recovery.
- Add safety/guardrails: permissions, confirmations, allow/deny lists, dry-run modes, and audit logs.
- Collaborate with product/AI engineers to map intent (voice-driven commands) to deterministic, verifiable actions.

Required experience

- Strong experience shipping desktop software on both Windows and macOS.
- Deep familiarity with OS-level automation concepts and constraints (macOS Accessibility + permissions; Windows UI Automation + input constraints).
- Proven ability to build reliable automation (not just demos) across diverse user environments.
- Excellent debugging skills for stateful, event-driven systems; robust logging/ observability practices
