Position Title: NDT Expert (Level III) – DQE (Design Quality Engineering)
Location: Bangalore/Pune (Travel across supplier locations as required)
Department: DQE
Reporting To: Head of DQE / Quality Engineering Leader
Position Summary
Envision is seeking a highly experienced Level III NDT Expert to join the DQE team and serve as the technical authority for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) across critical wind turbine components and supplier manufacturing operations. The role will be responsible for establishing NDT standards, qualifying suppliers, supporting manufacturing surveillance, resolving quality issues, and driving continuous improvement in inspection and defect prevention processes.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the quality and reliability of castings, welded structures, tower sections, rear frames, gearboxes, hubs, nacelle structures, and other safety-critical components throughout the supplier ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
NDT Technical Leadership
- Serve as the organization's subject matter expert for NDT technologies including UT, RT, MT, PT, and VT.
- Define, review, and approve NDT procedures, Written practices documents,
- Scan plans, Specifications, acceptance criteria, and inspection requirements for critical wind turbine components.
- Review and approve supplier NDT techniques, procedures, personnel qualifications, and inspection reports.
- Provide technical guidance on defect characterization, inspection strategy, and code interpretation.
Supplier Quality & Manufacturing Surveillance
- Support supplier qualification, process capability assessment, and manufacturing readiness reviews.
- Conduct technical audits and surveillance at supplier facilities producing: Hub Castings, Welded fabrications, Tower sections, Rear frames, Main frames, Gearbox housings, Structural and safety-critical components
- Witness critical NDT activities and ensure compliance with approved procedures and standards.
- Work closely with SQE and manufacturing surveillance teams to improve supplier performance.
Failure Analysis & Problem Resolution
- Lead investigations on NDT-related non-conformities, manufacturing defects, and field quality issues.
- Conduct root cause analysis using methodologies such as 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, and Fault Tree Analysis.
- Develop and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Support warranty and reliability improvement initiatives.
Quality System & Standards Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable international standards including ISO 9712, ASNT, ASME, AWS, EN Standards, DNV requirements, IEC standards applicable to wind energy equipment
- Participate in supplier quality audits, special process audits, and system assessments.
- Drive standardization and continuous improvement of NDT practices across global suppliers.
Capability Development
- Train, coach, and develop supplier quality personnel and inspection teams on NDT best practices.
- Support competency development programs for surveillance engineers and supplier inspectors.
- Promote advanced NDT technologies and digital inspection methods where applicable.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with Design Engineering, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing, Procurement, Project Quality, and Global Quality teams.
- Provide technical inputs during New Product Introduction (NPI), localization, and supplier development projects.
- Support risk assessments, PFMEA reviews, and control plan development for critical manufacturing processes.
Required Qualifications
Education bachelor's degree or higher in: Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Welding Engineering, NDT Engineering,
Quality Engineering, Related technical discipline
Certifications Mandatory:
ASNT Level III or ISO 9712 Level III Certification in one or more of the following methods: Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT)
Preferred:
- Welding inspection certifications such as AWS-CWI, CSWIP, or equivalent.
- Experience 10+ years of experience in NDT, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, or quality engineering.
- Minimum 5 years in a technical leadership role involving supplier quality or manufacturing surveillance.
- Strong experience in inspection and quality control of: Large steel castings, Welded structures, Tower fabrications, Heavy fabrication, Gearbox housings, Wind turbine components like Hub Castings, Main Frame Casting, Energy, heavy engineering, offshore, railway, or oil & gas industries
Technical Competencies
- Advanced knowledge of weld defects, casting defects, metallurgy, and fracture mechanisms.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including Welding, Heat treatment, Casting, Machining, Surface treatment
- Expertise in defect interpretation and acceptance criteria evaluation.
- Robust working knowledge of inspection planning, quality assurance, and risk based inspection methodologies.
- Experience with RCA, 8D, FMEA, SPC, and quality management systems.
