Firmware Engineer / Embedded Systems Engineer – Medical Devices
INDQ is looking for a Firmware / Embedded Systems Engineer to develop reliable, production-ready firmware for medical devices and advanced engineering products. The ideal candidate should have robust hands-on experience with ESP32, STM32, Nordic Semiconductor platforms, sensor interfacing, communication protocols, real-time embedded systems, and signal processing. The role will involve working closely with hardware, biomedical, mechanical, and product-development teams to convert device requirements into robust embedded solutions.
The candidate should be comfortable working from the sensor level to the complete device level — including peripheral interfacing, communication, data acquisition, signal processing, control algorithms, debugging, validation, and firmware documentation.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop embedded firmware for ESP32, STM32, Nordic nRF52/nRF53/nRF54 and similar microcontrollers.
- Develop firmware for medical and healthcare devices involving sensors, actuators, displays, communication modules, and data acquisition systems.
- Interface and acquire data from various sensors such as:
- ECG / biopotential sensors
- PPG / SpO₂ sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Pressure sensors
- IMUs
- Load cells
- Optical sensors
- Analog front ends (AFEs)
- Other biomedical and industrial sensors
- Implement signal conditioning and digital signal-processing algorithms for noisy physiological and sensor data.
- Develop algorithms for filtering, noise reduction, feature extraction, signal quality assessment, and parameter estimation.
- Work with ADCs, DACs, timers, PWM, interrupts, DMA, GPIO, RTC, watchdogs, and low-power peripherals.
- Develop and debug communication interfaces including: UART, SPI, I²C, RS-232 / RS-485, CAN / CAN-FD, USB, BLE, Wi-Fi, Ethernet
- Develop BLE applications and profiles using Nordic/Zephyr or equivalent platforms.
- Interface embedded systems with mobile applications, PCs, cloud platforms, and external medical equipment where required.
- Implement real-time control and state-machine-based firmware.
- Develop bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, and OTA updates where required.
- Implement data logging, memory management,
EEPROM/Flash storage, and configuration management.
- Perform hardware bring-up and board-level debugging.
- Debug firmware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, JTAG/SWD debuggers, and other laboratory equipment.
- Analyze communication buses and troubleshoot hardware–firmware integration issues.
- Optimize firmware for performance, memory usage, power consumption, and reliability.
- Develop firmware with appropriate fault handling, watchdog mechanisms, error detection, and recovery mechanisms.
- Participate in firmware verification, validation, and system-level testing.
- Maintain firmware architecture, source-code documentation, interface specifications, test procedures, and technical documentation.
- Work within a structured medical-device product-development and quality-management environment.
Experience with FreeRTOS, Zephyr RTOS, or other RTOS environments is highly desirable.
Programming
* Strong proficiency in Embedded C
- Good knowledge of C++
- Pointers, structures, unions, bit manipulation, memory management
- Interrupt-driven programming
- DMA-based data acquisition
- Timers and peripheral programming
- State machines
- Multithreading / RTOS concepts
- Memory-constrained embedded programming
- Version control using Git The candidate should be able to read a communication protocol specification and implement/debug the protocol at firmware level.
Signal Processing
This is an important part of the role.
The candidate should have practical understanding of:
- Digital signal processing
- Sampling theory
- Nyquist theorem
- Digital filtering
- Moving-average filters
- FIR / IIR filters
- Low-pass / high-pass / band-pass filtering
- Notch filtering
- Noise reduction
- Baseline removal
- Signal normalization
- FFT / frequency-domain analysis
- Peak detection
- Feature extraction
- Signal quality assessment

- Real-time signal processing on microcontrollers
- Knowledge of the following is an advantage:
- Medical-device firmware development
- Physiological signal acquisition
- ECG / PPG / SpO₂
- Patient monitoring systems
- Wearable medical devices
- Diagnostic devices
- Therapeutic devices
- Sensor calibration
- Measurement accuracy and repeatability
- Firmware verification and validation
- Risk-based development
- IEC 62304
- IEC 60601
- ISO 13485
- ISO 14971
- Software lifecycle documentation
- Design inputs / outputs
- Verification and validation
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who can independently take ownership of firmware development, rather than someone who only writes basic microcontroller code. The ideal candidate should be able to:
Understand requirement → select architecture → interface hardware → acquire sensor data → process signals → implement algorithms → establish communication → debug → validate → document → release production firmware.
Strong hands-on problem-solving ability is more important than knowing a large number of platforms theoretically.
Experience
Recommended experience: 2–5+ years in embedded/firmware development. Freshers with exceptional hands-on experience in embedded systems, biomedical instrumentation, signal processing, and significant personal/academic projects may also be considered.
Education
Preferred backgrounds:
- B.E. / B.Tech – Electronics & Communication Engineering
- B.E. / B.Tech – Electrical / Electronics Engineering
- B.E. / B.Tech – Biomedical Engineering
- B.E. / B.Tech – Instrumentation Engineering
- M.E. / M.Tech in relevant fields
Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
