About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on Applied AI & Automation Engineer to help us add AI, intelligent automation and agentic capabilities to an established custom-built business platform.

Our existing CRM is built in PHP/Laravel and manages major business functions including leads, sales, quoting, projects, installations, invoicing, reporting and other operational workflows.

You will work closely with our Product Manager and existing development team to understand the current platform and progressively build practical AI capabilities around our existing systems and data.

This is a hands-on engineering role.

We are not looking for someone whose AI experience is primarily using ChatGPT/Claude manually, writing prompts, or completing AI courses.

AI Inside Our CRM

Build capabilities that allow users to interact naturally with existing business data.

For example, users may want to ask questions about:

- Lead volumes
- Conversion rates
- Lead-source performance
- Cost per lead
- Sales performance
- Marketing ROI
- Operational performance
- Customer and project information

The goal is to make existing business data easier to access, analyse and act on.

AI Agents & AI Employees

Help us design and build AI-powered capabilities for areas such as:

- Sales intelligence
- Sales coaching
- Marketing
- Content
- Customer operations
- Internal reporting
- Business-process automation

Some solutions may involve AI agents, multiple specialist components, external systems and approval workflows.

You will be expected to determine the most appropriate technical approach for each problem.

Business Process Automation

Build integrations and automations between our CRM and external systems.

Examples may involve:

- Email
- Documents and attachments
- Customer records
- Accounting systems
- Marketing platforms
- Google services
- Internal workflows

A typical project may require retrieving information from one system, processing or interpreting it and taking an appropriate action in another system.

AI-Powered Marketing





Help develop an AI-enabled marketing capability using information from our:

- CRM
- Customer database
- Lead sources
- Advertising platforms
- Campaign performance
- Landing pages
- Website
- Sales results

Potential use cases include campaign analysis, customer segmentation, landing-page optimisation, content recommendations, CRO, SEO/AEO, performance monitoring and continuous optimisation.

What You Will Be Responsible For

- Understand our existing CRM architecture, database and workflows.
- Participate in technical knowledge transfer with our existing developers.
- Identify appropriate integration points for AI and automation.
- Design and build production-ready AI/LLM applications.
- Build AI agents and multi-step AI workflows where appropriate.
- Integrate LLMs with existing business applications.
- Integrate external platforms using APIs and webhooks.
- Work with existing SQL databases and business data.
- Build workflow automations and orchestration.
- Work with structured and unstructured business information.
- Design reliable methods for AI applications to interact with existing systems.
- Build internal AI assistants and business-intelligence capabilities.
- Test and evaluate AI output quality.
- Handle exceptions and production failures.
- Implement appropriate logging and monitoring.
- Consider performance, latency and operating cost.
- Apply appropriate security, privacy and access controls.
- Document technical architecture and integrations.
- Work closely with Product and existing engineering teams from discovery through production.

Essential Technical Experience

You should have solid hands-on experience in several of the following areas:

- Python and/or Node.js
- REST APIs
- Webhooks
- JSON
- OAuth / API authentication
- SQL / relational databases
- Backend application development
- Claude, OpenAI, Gemini or similar LLM APIs
- LLM application development
- AI agents / agentic workflows
- Tool / function calling




- Structured outputs
- RAG
- Embeddings / vector search
- Workflow automation
- n8n, Make, Zapier or similar platforms
- Prompt and context engineering
- AI/LLM evaluation
- Git
- Testing and debugging
- Cloud deployment
- Logging and monitoring

Highly Desirable

Experience with any of the following would be valuable:

- PHP/Laravel applications
- MySQL
- CRM or ERP systems
- Gmail / Google APIs
- Google Ads API
- Marketing technology
- Xero or accounting integrations
- Sales automation

- Event-driven systems
- Production systems handling business/customer data

You do not need to be our primary PHP/Laravel developer, but you must be capable of understanding an existing production application and working effectively with the developers who maintain it.

- Can work collaboratively with an existing development team.
- Is comfortable challenging assumptions and recommending a better approach when required.

Experience

Ideally:

5 - 7+ years of software/backend/integration engineering experience

with meaningful recent hands-on experience building AI/LLM applications, AI agents, integrations or automation systems.

We are also open to candidates with fewer years of experience if they can demonstrate exceptional hands-on production work.
