Qualification
- B.E/B. Tech - Mechanical /Metallurgical Engineering. Desirable: Master s degree in metallurgical /Welding Technology.
- Should be an International Welding Engineer (IWE).
- Should have ISO 9712:2021 Level II/III or ASNT/INST Level II/III certification for NDT activities like VT, PT, UT, RT, MPT & LT (leak test).
- Knowledge of latest version of EN 15085 series standard & ISO 3834 series is must.
- Shall have experience & expertise in stainless steel, Corten steel and dissimilar metal welds used in rail vehicles / rolling stock industry using laser welding / TIG / MAG/ Spot welding / MIG Arc spot welding and Seam welding.
- Proficiency in welding metallurgy is preferable.
Experience
Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in Rail vehicle or rolling stock industry as welding assessor with inspection & Testing activities
Job Responsibility
1. Pre-Welding Inspection
- Review and approve welding documents - Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR) & Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ).
- Verify consumables (electrodes, filler wires, shielding gases) as per approved WPS.
- Ensure proper welding practices such as: Run-on and run-off tabs, preheating requirements, Compliance with drawings and latest EN/ISO standards
- Inspect weld fit-up: Joint preparation and edge geometry, Root gap and alignment as per drawings/WPS.
- Witness and validate trial/sample welds (especially laser welding) before production.
2. In-Process Welding Inspection
- Monitor and verify welding parameters:
Current, voltage, travel speed, weld sequence.
- Ensure inter-pass temperature control as per WPS.
- Check weld bead quality: Shape, size, profile, and uniformity.
- Verify proper cleaning between passes and weld layer integrity.
- Ensure adherence to approved welding procedures during execution.
3. Post-Welding Inspection
- Inspect welds for: Size, profile, and appearance, Compliance with drawings and weld classification requirements & Adequate penetration and fusion in weld joint.
- Perform /witness Visual Inspection (VT) as per ISO 17637.
- Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): UT, RT, MPT, DPT, LT as applicable standards.
- Review and approve NDT reports.
- Witness Destructive Testing (DT) where required and validate reports.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain and verify inspection checklists and test reports.
- Review and approve NDT & DT documentation.
- Prepare Final Welding Quality Reports with stage clearance.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for weld defects: Identify failure causes, recommend corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) & Suggest process improvements for welding quality enhancement.
- Preparation and submission of Daily/Weekly/Monthly project progress report.
