Job Description: Technical Editor

Position Type: Full-Time

Department: Learning

Role Overview

The Technical Editor plays a critical role in quality assurance within our publishing and production pipeline. This position is directly responsible for safeguarding layout accuracy, consistency, and structural integrity across typeset materials before final handover to clients.

Serving as the technical link between reviewers, compositors (typesetters), and clients, you will orchestrate the collation of master proof markups, conduct rigorous page-by-page QA checks, and manage complex editorial queries to ensure flawless client deliverables on time.

Key Responsibilities

1. Proof Collation & Master Markup

- Reviewer Consolidation: Gather, reconcile, and synthesise physical or digital markups from multiple subject-matter experts, copyeditors, and proofreaders into a clean, single master set of proofs.

- Conflict Resolution: Identify and resolve conflicting edits between reviewers before transferring instructions to production or typesetting teams.

- Client Handover Preparation: Audit final consolidated proofs for clarity and accuracy prior to official client submission.

2. Quality Assurance (QA) of Typeset Pages

- Layout & Formatting Audits: Inspect typeset proofs against source manuscripts to verify text flow, hyphenation, page breaks, header/footer alignment, and design integrity.

- Visual Asset Checks: Ensure figure captions, tables, cross-references, equations, and artwork match designated specs and placement guidelines.

- First-to-Final Pass Verification: Validate that all author, reviewer, and client corrections have been accurately applied without introducing new layout or typesetting errors.

3. Query & Feedback Management

- Query Tracking: Maintain a structured log of editorial, technical, and layout queries arising during the production cycle.

- Stakeholder Coordination: Serve as the central point of contact to resolve queries efficiently among authors, production editors, and client contact leads.

- Post-Handover Feedback: Track, categorise, and archive client-returned feedback to implement continuous improvement in typesetting workflows.

Required Qualifications & Skills

- Experience: 2–4 years of technical editing, proofreading, or production editor experience within academic, STM, educational, or complex professional publishing.

- Technical QA Eye: Exceptional attention to detail with proven expertise in desktop publishing standards, page layout principles, and typography rules.

- Tool Proficiency: Fluency in PDF editing software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Pro markup tools), along with experience in MS Office suite and standard workflow tracking systems.

- Communication & Precision: Robust verbal and written communication skills to articulate precise instructions to typesetters and explain queries clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

- Organisation: Demonstrated ability to manage high-volume, deadline-driven proof collation schedules while maintaining zero-defect accuracy standards.

Preferred Qualifications

- Familiarity with markup standards (e.g., standard British/US proofreading marks) and style guides (e.g., Chicago, APA, or internal client styles).

- Experience with XML/HTML content structures or automated publishing platforms.

- Background in managing typeset proofs for STEM, ELT, or complex illustrated titles.
