Project Architect — VillaRaj
Rajaswi Group | Paldi, Ahmedabad | Full-time, site-based
The project
Once in a generation, a building is attempted in India that is not merely constructed but composed.
VillaRaj is a private neoclassical residence rising in Paldi, Ahmedabad — designed by Robert Adam, founder of ADAM Architecture, Winchester, and widely regarded as the foremost classical architect working in Britain today. It is a house of domes, cornices, carved capitals and coursed ashlar: roughly 12,000 cubic feet of Gwalior Mint sandstone, cut, carved and set to the proportional discipline of the classical orders.
Almost nothing of this kind is being built in India today. Very little of it is being built anywhere.
The consultant team assembled around it reflects that ambition:
- Robert Adam / ADAM Architecture (UK) — design architect
- FMDC (David Richardson and Bruno Miglio) — stone and geology consultants, among the most respected natural stone specialists in the world
- Roundlight Ltd (UK) — architectural lighting design
- Charles Robert — architectural visualisation and CGI
- Specialist facade engineering, and Leviat / Hilti anchoring systems for the stone envelope
We are looking for one architect to stand at the centre of this, in Ahmedabad, and make it real.
The role
You will be Rajaswi Group's own architect on site — the single point at which design intent from Winchester becomes buildable drawings and correctly set stone in Paldi. You will report directly to the promoter-director and work alongside the Project Management Consultant, coordinating with the executive architect and the full consultant team.
This is not a drafting position. It is a coordination and detailing role of unusual breadth and unusual quality.
What you will own
- Drawing control across every discipline — architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and lighting. Maintaining the master drawing register, tracking revisions, and ensuring no discipline drifts out of coordination with another.
- GFC issue and discipline — driving Positive For Construction drawings to release on schedule, and ensuring nothing is built from a superseded sheet.
- Stone detailing — translating Robert Adam's design intent into setting-out drawings and a piece-by-piece stone schedule: every unit numbered, dimensioned, keyed to its moulding profile, carving grade, bed height and course.
- Stone BOQs and quantity verification — building and independently checking quantities so that what is billed is what is delivered.
- Shop drawing review — checking contractor and fabricator submittals against design intent before they reach site.
- Consultant coordination — raising, tracking and closing RFIs with ADAM Architecture, FMDC, Roundlight and the facade engineer, across time zones, with clarity and speed.
- Site presence — daily, on the ground, resolving what drawings cannot anticipate.
What this project will teach you
Honestly: more about classical architecture than any degree in India will.
You will spend your days inside the vocabulary of the orders — entablatures, architraves, dentils, volutes, coursing, bed heights, weathering, drip details. You will learn how a dome is actually coursed, why a cornice projects as far as it does, and what separates carved stone that ages beautifully from carved stone that streaks in the first monsoon. You will learn it not from books but by corresponding with the people who have spent their careers doing it.
Very few architects of your generation anywhere in the world will get this apprenticeship. It stays with you for life.
And beyond VillaRaj:
as Rajaswi Group develops its interests in real estate, the architect who proves themselves here stands to work alongside the finest classical practices of the West — the circle of Driehaus Prize–calibre architects with whom this project has already brought us into contact.
Who we are looking for
- B.Arch (M.Arch welcome), COA registered
- 5–12 years' experience in execution and working drawings; candidates from heritage conservation, temple architecture, haveli restoration or colonial-era restoration backgrounds are particularly encouraged — traditional moulding and masonry experience matters more to us than contemporary portfolio gloss
- Genuine command of AutoCAD; Revit, SketchUp and Rhino an advantage
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate MEP and structural drawings, not merely receive them
- Precision, obsessive record-keeping, and the confidence to tell a contractor no
- Fluent written English — you will correspond directly with UK consultants
- A real love of classical architecture. This is not optional.
Selection
Shortlisted candidates will be given one section detail from the project and asked to produce a setting-out drawing and stone schedule for a single bay, as a short paid assignment. We would rather see your hand than your portfolio.
What we offer
- Compensation well above Ahmedabad market for the right person — commensurate with experience and not a constraint for an exceptional candidate
- Direct reporting to ownership, with real decision-making authority
- Direct working exposure to ADAM Architecture, FMDC and Roundlight
- A single building to give yourself to entirely, done properly
To apply: send your CV and a portfolio of your detailing work — working drawings, not renders — through Indeed. Tell us in three sentences why classical architecture interests you.
Rajaswi Group is an equal opportunity employer.
