About the Role
Magga Paints Private Limited is looking for a Chemist – R&D; to join our Research & Development team and contribute to the development, improvement and quality enhancement of our paint and coating products.
The candidate will be responsible for new product formulation, formulation optimization, laboratory testing, raw material evaluation, troubleshooting and technical support to production and quality teams.
The ideal candidate should have practical knowledge of water-based paints, emulsions, pigments, resins, additives and paint manufacturing processes, along with a strong understanding of chemistry and laboratory practices.
Key Responsibilities1. Product Development & Formulation
- Develop new formulations for interior and exterior wall paints, primers, putties, textures and other coating products.
- Modify and optimize existing formulations to improve product performance, cost and application properties.
- Conduct laboratory trials and evaluate different combinations of resins, pigments, extenders, additives and other raw materials.
- Develop cost-effective formulations without compromising product quality and performance.
- Maintain proper formulation records, trial reports and technical documentation.
2. Raw Material Evaluation
- Evaluate and approve new raw materials and alternative raw material sources.
- Conduct comparative testing of pigments, binders, fillers, additives, solvents and other ingredients.
- Study the impact of raw material variations on product performance, stability and cost.
- Work closely with the purchase and quality teams for raw material specifications.
3. Laboratory Testing & Quality Evaluation
Conduct and monitor relevant physical and chemical tests, including:
- Viscosity
- pH
- Density / specific gravity
- Fineness of grind
- Hiding power / opacity
- Colour and shade matching
- Drying time
- Gloss
- Adhesion
- Scrub resistance
- Water resistance
- Alkali resistance
- Storage stability
- Sag resistance
- Application properties
- Other relevant performance tests for paints and coatings
Maintain accurate laboratory records and test reports.
4. Production Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to the production team during manufacturing trials and scale-up.
- Investigate problems related to viscosity, shade, settling, separation, drying, application, stability and other product defects.
- Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist in transferring successful laboratory formulations to production scale.
- Monitor batch-to-batch consistency and support continuous improvement.
5. New Product & Process Improvement
- Research new technologies, raw materials and additives applicable to the paints and coatings industry.
- Identify opportunities to improve product performance and reduce manufacturing costs.
- Conduct competitor product benchmarking and performance comparisons.
- Participate in development of recent products based on market and customer requirements.
- Support development of environmentally friendly and improved-performance coating systems.
6. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain formulation sheets, laboratory records, test reports and development documents.
- Maintain proper records of product trials and modifications.
- Ensure laboratory work is carried out according to established safety and quality procedures.
- Follow proper handling, storage and disposal procedures for chemicals and laboratory materials.
Key Skills Required
- Strong knowledge of chemistry and paint/coating formulations.
- Practical experience in water-based paints and coatings preferred.
- Understanding of pigments, binders/resins, fillers, solvents and additives.
- Good laboratory testing and analytical skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot formulation and production problems.
- Strong observation and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to conduct independent laboratory trials.
- Good documentation and reporting skills.
- Ability to work closely with Production, Quality, Purchase and Sales teams.
- Cost-conscious approach to formulation development.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.

Candidates with experience in any of the following will be preferred:
- Decorative paints
- Interior/exterior emulsions
- Acrylic emulsions
- Primers
- Wall putties
- Textured coatings
- Water-based coatings
- Pigment dispersion
- Paint additives
- Formulation development
- Paint quality testing
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The performance of the R&D; Chemist will be evaluated based on:
- Successful development of new products.
- Improvement of existing formulations.
- Reduction in formulation/manufacturing cost.
- Consistency and quality of developed products.
- Successful laboratory-to-production scale-up.
- Speed and effectiveness of technical troubleshooting.
- Successful evaluation of alternative raw materials.
- Reduction in product complaints and formulation-related issues.
- Maintenance of accurate R&D; documentation.
- Timely completion of assigned development projects.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a hands-on and technically strong chemist who is comfortable working in a paint manufacturing environment and is willing to spend significant time in the laboratory and production area.
The candidate should have a problem-solving mindset, attention to detail and genuine interest in developing paint and coating formulations.
Candidates who can independently formulate, test, troubleshoot and optimize paint products will be strongly preferred.

Salary: depending on experience, technical capability and suitability for the role.
