About the Role
We're building a cross-platform Electron desktop application for real-time instrument control and signal visualization TypeScript and React in the renderer, and a Node main process owning device I/O, session state, and persistence. You will work on both sides of that boundary and on the IPC contract itself, while also owning our real-time data interfaces, hardware/processing integrations, and the release pipeline that ships the app to end users.
Responsibilities
- Own application architecture across the renderer/main process boundary, including the IPC contract: message schemas, lifecycle, error propagation, and backpressure.
- Build real-time data interfaces — live signal plotting, frequency-domain and band-power views, spectrograms, a node-graph pipeline editor, and dockable multi-viewport layouts.
- Handle continuous multi-channel streams at kilohertz sample rates through decimation, buffering, worker offloading, and canvas/WebGL render loops held to a frame budget.
- Optimize for sustained throughput under load, not just one-off performance wins.
- Integrate the application with instrument hardware and a separate signal-processing engine across process and network boundaries.
- Work through native interfaces where a JavaScript path isn't suitable.
- Define and version wire contracts, handle binary payloads, and diagnose faults that cross process/network boundaries.
- Own build, packaging, and release: signed and notarized installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
- Manage artifact publication and an OTA update channel for installed clients.
- Maintain and troubleshoot automated cross-platform CI/CD pipelines, including their failure modes.
Requirements
- 3+ years building production web or desktop applications.
- Robust TypeScript and modern React, with a solid grasp of renders, effects, and state boundaries.
- Real Node.js experience, either server-side or in a desktop main process.
- Demonstrated ability to own a feature end-to-end — data layer, UI, and the release that ships it.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD — able to read a pipeline, diagnose a failed job, and fix it.
- Git fluency and clear written communication, since project context lives largely in commits and tickets.
Strongly Desirable
- Experience with Electron, including its process model and IPC security.
- Desktop packaging and release experience — installers, versioning, code signing, notarization.
- Auto-update / OTA implementation for desktop applications.
- Cloud delivery experience — publishing and hosting build artifacts, along with related access control.
- CI pipeline authoring, ideally with cross-platform builds.
Nice to Have
- VS Code extension development or other editor/IDE tooling experience — we're growing our internal developer tooling.
- C++ or another systems language — our processing engine is written in it, and the ability to read, trace, or contribute to it is valuable.
- Native build tooling — CMake, cross-platform compilation, dependency management, and build debugging.
- Native addons or FFI from Node, bridging native libraries into a JavaScript runtime.
- Real-time data visualization experience — canvas/WebGL charting or a signal-processing background.
- Monorepo tooling at scale.
- Storybook and design-system work.
- Exposure to scientific instruments, medical devices, or hardware-adjacent software.
