Production Chemist Roles and Responsibilities A Production Chemist is responsible for managing and monitoring chemical manufacturing processes to ensure products are manufactured safely, consistently, efficiently, and according to quality specifications.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Production Operations
- Execute manufacturing processes according to approved SOPs, batch records, and process instructions.
- Monitor chemical reactions, temperatures, pressures, pH, mixing, filtration, drying, and other critical process parameters.
- Ensure production batches are completed within the approved time and process limits.
- Batch Manufacturing
- Review and follow batch manufacturing records.
- Verify raw materials, quantities, equipment status, and process conditions before starting production.
- Record process observations and results accurately.
- Ensure proper identification and traceability of materials and batches.
- In-Process Quality Control
- Collect in-process samples as per the sampling procedure.
- Perform or coordinate required chemical and physical tests.
- Monitor results against approved specifications.
- Immediately report deviations, abnormal observations, or out-of-specification results.
- Process Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Identify process abnormalities and investigate production problems.
- Assist in root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Support process optimization to improve yield, productivity, and product consistency.
- Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Follow chemical handling, PPE, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and transfer of chemicals.
- Follow applicable environmental and waste-disposal procedures.
- Report unsafe conditions, spills, leaks, and incidents immediately.
- Equipment & Housekeeping
- Ensure production equipment is clean and ready for use.
- Verify equipment status before batch processing.
- Report equipment malfunction to the maintenance team.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and 5S standards in the production area.
- Documentation
- Maintain accurate batch records, logbooks, checklists, and production reports.
- Ensure entries are complete, legible, and made contemporaneously.
- Maintain records of raw materials, process parameters, yields, samples, and deviations.
- Quality & GMP Compliance
- Follow applicable GMP, GLP, SOP, and quality-system requirements, where applicable to the industry.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Support deviation, change-control, investigation, and CAPA activities.
- Ensure production activities comply with approved procedures.
- Coordination
- Coordinate with QA, QC, Maintenance, Warehouse/Stores, EHS, and Production Planning teams.
- Communicate batch status, material requirements, quality issues, and equipment problems.
- Support technology transfer, scale-up, validation, and current-product introduction when required.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve yield, cycle time, energy consumption, solvent usage, and overall productivity.
- Participate in lean manufacturing, 5S, waste reduction, and process-improvement projects.
- Maintain awareness of new process technologies and safer chemical practices.
