Job Summary The OT Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role involves assisting surgeons and anesthetists, maintaining aseptic techniques, preparing operation theatres, handling surgical instruments, ensuring patient safety, and delivering high-quality perioperative nursing care in accordance with hospital policies and clinical protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Operative Responsibilities
- Prepare and arrange operation theatre equipment, instruments, and consumables required for scheduled surgeries.
- Verify patient identity, consent forms, investigations, and surgical site markings.
- Ensure compliance with surgical safety checklists and infection control standards.
- Prepare patients physically and psychologically for surgical procedures.
- Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare teams regarding surgical requirements.
Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons and anesthetists during surgical procedures.
- Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques throughout surgeries.
- Perform duties as a Scrub Nurse and Circulating Nurse as required.
- Count surgical instruments, sponges, and needles before, during, and after procedures.
- Monitor patient safety and promptly report any concerns to the surgical team.
- Handle, prepare, and maintain surgical equipment and instruments.
Post-Operative Responsibilities
- Assist in transferring patients safely to the recovery area.
- Monitor patients for immediate post-operative complications.
- Complete surgical documentation accurately.
- Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of OT equipment and instruments.
- Prepare the theatre for subsequent procedures.
Quality & Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to NABH, infection control, and patient safety guidelines.
- Participate in code blue and emergency situations when required.
- Report incidents, near misses, and equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Qualification
- B.Sc. Nursing / GNM Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid State Nursing Council Registration.
- Additional certification in OT Nursing or Critical Care will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 2 to 10 years of experience in Operation Theatre Nursing.
- Experience in handling major, minor, emergency, and specialty surgeries.
- Exposure to specialties such as General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neuro Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Gastro Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, or Transplant Surgery is preferred.
