Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Heavy Industry)

About the Role

Balfour Beatty is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and technical delivery of complex heavy industrial projects. The role will cover HVAC and/or piping systems, design verification, technical reviews, procurement support, design risk, and project delivery.

You will work with multidisciplinary design teams, project teams, consultants, manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors from concept and detailed design through installation, commissioning, and handover.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and verify mechanical design packages in line with project specifications, client requirements, and UK standards/codes.
- Develop and review HVAC and/or piping systems for heavy industrial environments.
- Identify design gaps, technical risks, and constructability issues, and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Conduct technical design reviews, including compliance, constructability, operability, maintainability, and risk assessments.
- Prepare and review design calculations, specifications, schedules, reports, and technical documentation.
- Support FEED and EPC project delivery across design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and handover.
- Support procurement and supplier evaluation, including technical review of equipment and specialist packages.
- Coordinate with consultants, manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.




- Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in engineering design and delivery.
- Ensure compliance with current industry standards, regulations, and engineering best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant mechanical design experience in heavy industry, industrial manufacturing, energy, process, infrastructure, or related sectors.
- Robust experience in HVAC and/or piping design.
- Experience in design review and verification against project specifications and engineering standards.
- Experience with constructability assessments and design risk management.
- Exposure to installation, testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Understanding of engineering procurement and supplier engagement.
- Experience working on FEED/EPC projects is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of UK engineering standards, codes, and regulations.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, consultants, manufacturers, and contractors.
- Strong problem-solving, technical leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience with BIM and CAD environments is advantageous.
- CEng / working towards Chartered Engineer status is advantageous.
