About Bioscan ResearchBioscan Research is a medical technology company developing innovative photonics- and data science-based medical devices for point-of-care diagnosis and monitoring. Its flagship product, CEREBO, uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to support rapid, non-invasive assessment of intracranial bleeding. Bioscan is expanding its optical technology platform.

Role OverviewWe are looking for an Optical Design & Development Engineer who is not only comfortable with engineering and product development but is also curious, research-oriented and interested in exploring new optical technologies. The role will involve optical system design and simulation, understanding light–tissue interaction, developing new sensing approaches, optical fabrication and vendor development. The ideal candidate should enjoy learning, experimentation, literature review and solving open-ended technical problems, and should be comfortable taking an idea from research and simulation through prototype development and integration.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and develop optical systems involving light sources, detectors, lenses, filters, optical paths, illumination and collection systems for biomedical applications.
- Perform optical modelling and simulation using tools such as Zemax/OpticStudio, LightTools, TracePro, COMSOL or equivalent.
- Study and apply principles of light–tissue interaction, including absorption, scattering, penetration depth and photon propagation in biological tissue.
- Research and evaluate emerging optical sensing, photonics and biomedical imaging technologies relevant to Bioscan's product roadmap.
- Conduct literature and patent searches to understand existing technologies,

identify opportunities and support development of novel optical approaches.
- Support development of NIRS and other optical sensing architectures, including multi-wavelength and multi-detector configurations.
- Develop technical concepts, perform feasibility studies and experimentally evaluate promising approaches.
- Select optical components based on performance, availability, manufacturability and cost.
- Prepare optical specifications, drawings and technical requirements for custom components and assemblies.
- Identify, evaluate and develop optical component and fabrication vendors.
- Coordinate with vendors for fabrication of lenses, filters, optical assemblies, mounts and other custom optical components.
- Support prototype fabrication, optical alignment and integration with mechanical and electronic systems.
- Participate in optical characterization and testing of prototypes and progressively develop deeper expertise in optical measurement techniques.
- Maintain optical designs, simulation files, specifications, BOMs, drawings and development records.
- Work closely with mechanical, electronics, firmware, software, AI and clinical teams during product development.
- Investigate optical performance issues, formulate hypotheses, conduct experiments and support design optimization.
- Document research findings,

experimental results and technical conclusions for internal development and future publications/patents where appropriate.

Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Physics, Applied Physics or a related field.
- 1–4 years of experience in optical design, photonics, opto-mechanical systems, biomedical optics or a related field.
- Basic hands-on experience with at least one optical design/simulation software such as Zemax OpticStudio, LightTools, TracePro, COMSOL or equivalent.
- Valuable understanding of geometrical optics, physical optics and optical system design.
- Basic understanding of light propagation, scattering, absorption and light–tissue interaction is highly desirable.
- Understanding of LEDs/lasers, photodiodes, detectors, lenses, filters and optical coatings.
- Ability to conduct technical literature searches, analyse research papers and translate research concepts into engineering experiments.
- Exposure to optical fabrication, machining, assembly or prototyping is preferred.
- Experience interacting with vendors and suppliers for custom optical components is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of optical testing and characterization is desirable; extensive testing experience is not essential.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a curious, experimental and research-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work on problems where the solution may not be clearly defined and independently explore alternative approaches.
- Strong interest in research, innovation and development of new optical technologies.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment combining photonics, electronics, software, AI and clinical sciences.
