About The Role
Meril Life Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Design Engineer to join its R&D; department focused on Medical Devices. This pivotal role involves designing and developing mechanical components, product enclosures, and assemblies that meet stringent medical standards. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to translate innovative concepts into manufacturable, reliable, and high-performance products. The role requires expertise in plastic injection molded components, precision metal parts, and enclosure design, with an emphasis on manufacturability, aesthetics, and cost efficiency.
The Design
Engineer will play a key role in supporting product lifecycle stages, from initial concept through prototyping, validation, and production transfer, ensuring compliance with global quality and regulatory standards.
Qualifications The ideal candidate should possess a B.E. / B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Design, or related disciplines. Candidates with relevant experience and a strong background in mechanical product design, particularly within the medical device or healthcare equipment sectors, are preferred. Diploma holders with pertinent experience may also be considered.
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in designing plastic molded and precision metal components is essential. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and CATIA,
along with knowledge of DFM/DFA principles, GD&T;, and tolerance analysis, is mandatory. Familiarity with medical device development standards like ISO 13485 and IEC 60601 will be advantageous.
Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and complete assemblies for medical devices, ensuring functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics, and durability. Translate product requirements into innovative, manufacturable designs using advanced CAD tools, creating detailed drawings, BOMs, and documentation. Conduct design reviews, implement improvements, and apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize manufacturing efficiency and product performance.
Design plastic injection molded components by selecting appropriate materials such as ABS, PC, Nylon, PEEK, and other medical-grade polymers. Define critical parameters including wall thickness, draft angles, ribs, bosses, and snap-fit features. Participate in mold design reviews and tooling trials, troubleshoot molding issues like sink marks, warpage, and flow marks, and coordinate with vendors for successful production.
Design precision metal parts utilizing CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and casting processes. Apply GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis, select suitable materials like stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and titanium, and define surface finishing requirements such as anodizing, polishing, or passivation. Collaborate with suppliers to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
Create functional and aesthetic enclosures and housings for medical devices, considering thermal management, cable routing, user accessibility, and safety standards. Integrate mechanical designs with electronic components and subsystems, ensuring compliance with usability and reliability standards specific to medical devices.
Support rapid prototyping using CNC, 3D printing,
and sheet metal fabrication, conducting fit, form, and functional evaluations. Participate in Design Verification and Design Validation activities, analyze test results, and implement necessary design modifications. Assist in risk management activities and incorporate user feedback to enhance product design.
Collaborate effectively with electronics, software, manufacturing, quality assurance, regulatory, and supply chain teams to facilitate smooth design transfer from R&D; to production. Support engineering change management activities, coordinate with external vendors, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and process efficiency.
Maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including design drawings, specifications, BOMs, and design history records. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as ISO 13485 and IEC 60601, participate in internal and external audits, and support design control processes to meet quality and regulatory requirements.
