Job Description – Purchase Engineer

Position: Purchase Engineer
Department: Purchase / Supply Chain
Location: Bengaluru
Reports To: Purchase Manager / Head – Supply Chain

Role Overview

The Purchase Engineer will be responsible for sourcing and procurement of machined, fabricated, heat-treated, and engineering components for machine manufacturing. The candidate should have a good technical understanding of manufacturing processes and be able to evaluate suppliers based on cost, quality, process capability, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

- Procure machined components, fabricated parts, standard components, and engineering materials as per BOM and drawings.
- Read and understand engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and BOMs.
- Source components from suitable suppliers and evaluate their technical capability.
- Handle procurement related to machining processes such as CNC, VMC, turning, grinding, milling, etc.
- Have good understanding of heat treatment processes such as hardening, tempering, annealing, normalizing, case hardening, etc.
- Coordinate with vendors for heat treatment, surface treatment, coating, and other subcontracting processes.
- Obtain quotations, prepare comparison statements, negotiate prices, and finalize suppliers.
- Develop current vendors for critical and specialized components.
- Follow up with suppliers to ensure on-time delivery as per production requirements.
- Coordinate with Design, PPC, Stores, Quality, and Production teams for material requirements.
- Monitor supplier quality, rejection, rework, and delivery performance.
- Support cost reduction,



alternate vendor development, and value engineering initiatives.
- Maintain Purchase Orders, vendor records, delivery schedules, and procurement data in ERP/SAP.

Technical Knowledge Required

- Engineering Drawing Reading
- Machining Processes
- Heat Treatment Processes
- Surface Treatment / Coating – basic knowledge
- Engineering Materials – basic knowledge of steels, alloys, etc.
- Basic understanding of GD&T; and tolerances
- Basic Quality Inspection & Quality Control knowledge
- Understanding of dimensional inspection and common measuring instruments
- Knowledge of supplier quality and rejection handling

Key Skills

- Strong vendor development and negotiation skills
- Good technical understanding of manufacturing processes
- Strong follow-up and coordination skills
- Cost-conscious and analytical approach
- Ability to evaluate suppliers on Quality + Cost + Delivery
- Good knowledge of MS Excel and ERP/SAP
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills

Qualification & Experience

- B.E./B.Tech – Mechanical Engineering - Only
- Experience in Purchase / Procurement in Machine Manufacturing, SPM, CNC, Precision Engineering, or Engineering Industries
- Candidates with hands-on experience in machining and heat-treatment procurement will be preferred.
