Job Title: Quality Engineer Gear manufacturing industry

Job Description: Quality Engineer / Quality In-Charge

Department: Quality Assurance / Quality Control

Reports To: Plant Head

Industry: Gear Manufacturing (Automotive, Agricultural, Industrial]

1. Job Purpose

To plan, implement, and monitor quality control and quality assurance systems across the gear manufacturing process — from raw material inspection through machining, heat treatment, gear cutting, grinding, and final dispatch — ensuring that all products meet customer drawings, engineering specifications, and applicable industry standards (IATIN/AGMA/ISO/DIN).

2. Key Responsibilities

Incoming & In-Process Quality

- Inspect and approve incoming raw materials (forgings, castings) against material certificates and specifications (chemical composition, hardness, grain flow).
- Monitor in-process quality at each stage: hobbing, shaping, shaving, grinding, honing, and de-burring.
- Conduct first-piece (FPI) and patrol/in-line inspections using gear-specific measuring instruments.
- Maintain Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts for critical characteristics (pitch, runout, lead, profile).

Gear-Specific Inspection

- Verify gear tooth parameters — involute profile, lead/helix angle, pitch, runout, backlash, tooth thickness — using gear measuring machines (GMM/CNC gear tester).
- Check case depth, core hardness, and surface hardness post heat treatment (carburizing/induction hardening) using micro-hardness testers.
- Verify surface finish (Ra values) on ground/honed gear faces and bores.
- Conduct dimensional inspection using CMM, gear rolling testers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and other precision instruments.

Heat Treatment & Metallurgical Quality

- Coordinate with heat treatment section for case depth verification, distortion control, and hardness profile checks.
- Review metallurgical test reports (microstructure, grain size, retained austenite where applicable).

Documentation & Systems

- Prepare and maintain quality records: inspection reports, PPAP, control plans, FMEA, PFD, and calibration records.
- Ensure compliance with IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 / ISO/TS quality management systems.
- Handle customer complaints, conduct root cause analysis (using 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone), and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
- Maintain traceability records for each batch/lot.

Calibration & Equipment

- Manage calibration schedule for all measuring and testing instruments (GMM, CMM, hardness testers, surface roughness testers) as per MSA guidelines.
- Ensure gauges (plug, ring, thread, gear tooth vernier) are calibrated and within tolerance.

Team & Process Management

- Supervise quality inspectors/technicians on the shop floor across shifts.
- Conduct internal audits (process audit, product audit, layered process audits - LPA).
- Liaise with customers during audits, PPAP submissions, and new product introduction (APQP).
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, Six Sigma, Poka-Yoke) to reduce rejection/rework rates.
- Train shop floor operators on quality standards and inspection techniques.

Supplier Quality (if applicable)

- Coordinate with suppliers for outsourced processes (forging, heat treatment, plating) and conduct supplier audits.

3. Technical Qualifications Required

Educational Qualification

- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or Industrial Engineering
- Additional certification in Quality Management (Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, ASQ CQE) preferred

Technical Knowledge & Skills

- Strong understanding of gear manufacturing processes: hobbing, shaping, shaving, grinding, honing, lapping
- Knowledge of gear terminology and standards: AGMA, DIN, ISO 1328 (gear tolerance classes), involute gear theory
- Hands-on experience with gear inspection equipment: Gear Measuring Machine (GMM), CNC gear tester, CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)
- Working knowledge of GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and engineering drawing interpretation
- Familiarity with heat treatment processes: carburizing, induction hardening, case depth and hardness verification
- Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments: micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, surface roughness testers, hardness testers (Rockwell/Vickers)

- Knowledge of SPC (Statistical Process Control), MSA (Measurement System Analysis), and Cpk/Ppk calculations
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plan documentation (core tools per IATF 16949)
- Understanding of ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 quality management systems
- Root cause analysis techniques: 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone/Ishikawa diagram
- Basic computer proficiency: MS Excel, quality software/ERP systems (SAP QM module preferred)

Experience

- 3–8 years of relevant experience in a gear manufacturing, automotive component, or precision machining industry
- Prior experience in a Quality Engineer / QC Engineer / Quality In-charge role preferred
- Exposure to OEM customer audits and PPAP submissions is an advantage

Certifications (Preferred, Not Mandatory)

- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
- Internal Auditor certification – IATF 16949 / ISO 9001
- Six Sigma Green Belt / Black Belt
