. Job Summary

The Nursing Superintendent will be responsible for the overall administration, supervision and functioning of the Nursing Department at Mind & Brain Hospital.

The role is responsible for ensuring high standards of patient care, effective nursing manpower management, staff discipline, clinical documentation, patient safety, infection control, medication safety, training, quality improvement and compliance with hospital policies and applicable regulatory/accreditation requirements.

The Nursing Superintendent will work closely with the Medical Director, Psychiatrists, Clinical Teams, Hospital Administration, HR, Pharmacy, Infection Control, Quality, Security and other departments to ensure safe and efficient patient care.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Overall Nursing Administration

- Manage and oversee the complete Nursing Department.
- Establish and maintain high standards of nursing care across all inpatient and clinical areas.
- Ensure implementation of nursing policies, SOPs, protocols and clinical procedures.
- Monitor the overall functioning of nursing services across all shifts.
- Conduct regular rounds and review nursing operations and patient-care standards.
- Identify operational gaps and implement corrective measures.
- Ensure continuity of nursing services 24/7.

B. Nursing Manpower Planning

- Assess nursing manpower requirements based on patient occupancy, workload and hospital requirements.
- Prepare, review and approve nursing duty rosters.
- Ensure adequate staffing for all shifts, including night shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, absenteeism and staff deployment.
- Coordinate with HR for recruitment, replacement and manpower requirements.
- Participate in interviews and selection of nursing personnel where required.
- Ensure appropriate allocation of staff according to qualifications, experience and competency.
- Monitor staff performance and initiate corrective action where required.

C. Supervision & Leadership

- Supervise Nursing Supervisors and ensure effective management of their respective shifts/areas.
- Conduct regular meetings with nursing supervisors and staff.
- Establish clear accountability within the nursing department.
- Address staff grievances, conflicts and disciplinary matters in coordination with HR and management.
- Maintain professional discipline and workplace conduct.
- Encourage teamwork, communication and a patient-centred culture.

D. Patient Care & Clinical Quality

- Ensure patients receive safe, ethical, compassionate and high-quality nursing care.
- Monitor implementation of individualized nursing care plans.
- Ensure proper patient assessment, observation, monitoring and documentation.
- Ensure timely escalation of deterioration or clinical concerns to the treating psychiatrist/doctor.
- Monitor care of high-risk psychiatric patients, including patients at risk of self-harm, aggression, falls or absconding.
- Ensure appropriate patient observation and safety measures are followed.
- Review patient-care complaints and implement corrective actions.

E. Psychiatric Patient Safety

Given the nature of Mind & Brain Hospital, the Nursing Superintendent will ensure strict compliance with psychiatric patient-safety protocols, including:

- Suicide/self-harm risk monitoring.
- Absconding prevention and monitoring.
- Management of aggressive or violent behaviour.
- Safe observation of high-risk patients.
- Safe management of restricted areas and vulnerable patients.
- Appropriate escalation of behavioural or clinical changes.
- Coordination with doctors and security during emergencies.
- Proper documentation of patient incidents and interventions.

F. Medication Management

- Ensure medicines are administered strictly according to authorized prescriptions.
- Monitor medication administration records and documentation.
- Ensure appropriate storage, handling and accountability of medicines.




- Monitor controlled/high-alert medication practices as per hospital policy.
- Ensure medication errors, omissions and adverse events are immediately reported and investigated.
- Coordinate with the Pharmacy Department regarding nursing medication requirements.
- Conduct periodic checks of medication-related nursing practices.

G. Documentation & Records

- Ensure accurate, complete and timely nursing documentation.
- Monitor nursing notes, observation charts, medication records, care plans and other clinical records.
- Conduct periodic audits of nursing documentation.
- Ensure patient records are maintained confidentially.
- Identify documentation gaps and implement corrective action.
- Ensure nursing records are readily available for internal audits and accreditation requirements.

H. Infection Prevention & Control

- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control policies.
- Coordinate with the Infection Control team.
- Monitor hand hygiene, PPE use and standard precautions.
- Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation and disposal.
- Monitor cleanliness and hygiene of patient-care areas.
- Ensure appropriate infection-control training for nursing staff.
- Participate in infection-control audits and corrective actions.

I. Training & Development

- Develop and implement a nursing training calendar.
- Conduct induction and orientation for newly joined nursing staff.
- Identify training and competency gaps.
- Organize regular training on:
- Psychiatric nursing care
- Patient safety
- Emergency response
- Basic life support
- Medication safety
- Infection control
- Documentation
- De-escalation and management of aggressive behaviour
- Suicide/self-harm prevention
- Fire and disaster management
- Maintain training and competency records.
- Evaluate staff performance and training effectiveness.

J. Quality & Accreditation

- Ensure nursing practices comply with hospital quality standards and applicable accreditation requirements.
- Participate in NABH and other regulatory/accreditation activities as applicable.
- Conduct regular nursing audits.
- Monitor nursing-related KPIs.
- Analyse incidents, complaints and adverse events.
- Develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure timely closure of audit observations and non-conformities.
- Maintain required quality documentation.

K. Emergency & Incident Management

- Ensure nursing staff are prepared to respond to medical and psychiatric emergencies.
- Coordinate nursing response during emergencies and critical incidents.
- Ensure emergency equipment is available and functional.
- Review serious incidents and ensure appropriate reporting.
- Coordinate with doctors, security and administration during major patient-safety incidents.
- Ensure emergency drills and mock drills are conducted as required.

L. Inventory & Equipment Management

- Monitor nursing inventory and consumable requirements.
- Ensure adequate availability of essential nursing supplies.
- Approve/coordinate nursing indents as per hospital procedure.
- Monitor proper use and storage of nursing equipment.
- Ensure preventive maintenance and timely reporting of equipment breakdowns.
- Conduct periodic stock and equipment verification.
- Minimize wastage and ensure accountability for hospital resources.

M. Coordination with Other Departments

The Nursing Superintendent will coordinate with:

- Medical Director / Psychiatrist
- Hospital Administration
- HR Department
- Pharmacy
- Psychology Department
- Infection Control
- Quality Department
- Front Office
- Billing
- Housekeeping
- Security
- Maintenance
- IT and other support departments





to ensure smooth and coordinated hospital operations.

3. Staff Performance Management

- Establish performance expectations for nursing staff.
- Review performance of Nursing Supervisors and nursing personnel.
- Identify performance gaps and recommend training or corrective action.
- Support performance appraisal processes.
- Recommend recognition for outstanding nursing performance.
- Coordinate disciplinary actions with HR and management when required.

4. Reporting & MIS

Prepare and submit periodic reports covering:

- Nursing manpower and staffing.
- Attendance and absenteeism.
- Patient occupancy and nursing workload.
- Nursing incidents.
- Medication errors.
- Patient complaints.
- Infection-control observations.
- Training conducted.
- Nursing audits.
- Equipment and inventory requirements.
- Other nursing-related KPIs requested by management.

5. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Performance will be evaluated based on:

- Overall quality of nursing services.
- Patient safety and reduction of nursing-related incidents.
- Effective manpower utilization.
- Staff attendance and discipline.
- Nursing documentation compliance.
- Medication safety compliance.
- Infection-control compliance.
- Patient and attendant satisfaction.
- Training and competency completion.
- Audit and accreditation compliance.
- Timely incident reporting and corrective action.
- Effective functioning of nursing services across all shifts.

6. Educational Qualification

Essential:

- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.

Preferred:

- M.Sc. Nursing / MBA Hospital Administration / Nursing Administration or equivalent relevant qualification.
- Certification or training in hospital quality/accreditation standards will be an advantage.

7. Experience

- Preferably 8–12 years of total nursing experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a nursing supervisory/administrative leadership position.
- Experience in psychiatric hospitals, mental-health facilities or large inpatient hospitals will be preferred.

10. General Responsibilities

The Nursing Superintendent may be assigned additional clinical, administrative, quality or operational responsibilities by the Hospital Administration/Medical Director based on organizational requirements.

Pay: ₹25,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
