Quality Engineer – Inspection Department (Foundry)Job Purpose
Responsible for ensuring the quality of cast components through incoming, in-process, and final inspection. The role involves monitoring casting quality, identifying defects, conducting root-cause analysis, and implementing corrective and preventive actions to meet customer and internal quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform inspection of foundry castings at various stages of production.
- Inspect components for dimensional accuracy, surface defects, casting defects, and metallurgical requirements.
- Identify and analyze defects such as blow holes, porosity, shrinkage, cracks, cold shuts, misruns, inclusions, sand defects, and dimensional variations.
- Conduct visual, dimensional, and functional inspection using appropriate measuring instruments and gauges.
- Coordinate with Production, Melting, Fettling, Pattern, and Process Engineering teams to resolve quality issues.
- Prepare inspection reports, rejection reports, and daily quality records.
- Monitor and control internal rejection, rework, and customer complaints.
- Carry out root-cause analysis using 5 Why, Fishbone, Pareto, and other quality tools.
- Implement and monitor corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Verify process parameters related to casting quality, including moulding, core making, melting, pouring, and fettling.
- Ensure calibration and proper use of measuring instruments and inspection equipment.
- Support PPAP, APQP, FMEA, Control Plan, and other customer quality requirements where applicable.
- Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final inspection as per drawings, specifications, and control plans.
- Maintain quality documentation and ensure compliance with ISO/IATF procedures as applicable.
- Support internal, customer,
and third-party quality audits.
- Analyze quality data and prepare reports for management.
- Train inspectors and production personnel on quality standards and defect identification.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce rejection and improve casting quality.
Required Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of foundry processes and casting defects.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T;, and dimensional inspection.
- Experience with measuring instruments such as Vernier caliper, micrometer, height gauge, bore gauge, gauges, etc.
- Knowledge of quality tools: 7 QC Tools, 5 Why, 8D, CAPA, Pareto, Fishbone.
- Knowledge of basic metallurgical and material-testing concepts.
- Positive problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with production and other departments.
- Basic knowledge of ISO 9001/IATF 16949 quality systems is advantageous.
- Computer skills, particularly MS Excel and quality reporting.
Preferred Qualification
- Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Metallurgy, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience in foundry/casting quality inspection preferred.
Experience
Typically 2–5 years of relevant experience in Quality/Inspection within a foundry or casting manufacturing environment.
