The Azure FinOps Engineer is responsible for providing cloud financial management, cost optimization, and governance services for Microsoft Azure environments. The role focuses on improving cost transparency, efficiency, predictability, and value realization from Azure cloud investments, while operating within established governance and security frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Azure Cost Visibility & Governance
- Monitor and analyze Azure cloud spend using Azure Cost Management and Billing
- Ensure consistent cost allocation and tagging across subscriptions and resources
- Support showback / chargeback mechanisms to improve financial transparency
- Prepare and maintain periodic cost reports and dashboards
Cost Optimization & Efficiency Management
- Identify optimization opportunities across Azure services including Virtual Machines, Storage, Databases, and App Services
- Recommend cost-efficient utilization strategies such as rightsizing and lifecycle management
- Track optimization actions and realized savings
- Review evolving Azure pricing models and services for efficiency improvements
Forecasting & Budget Management
- Support cloud spend forecasting and trend analysis
- Track actual spend against budgets and identify variances
- Provide inputs for financial planning related to Azure workloads
- Support cost analysis for new or changing Azure deployments
FinOps Framework Alignment
- Apply FinOps principles across cost visibility, optimization, and operational control
- Support cloud financial maturity assessments
- Define and monitor unit-cost metrics where applicable
- Promote standardized cloud financial practices
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work with engineering, operations, and financial stakeholders to drive cost awareness
- Present optimization insights and cost drivers in a clear and structured manner
- Support periodic FinOps and cloud cost review discussions
Compliance & Operational Discipline
- Maintain documentation and reports required for governance and audits
- Ensure adherence to security, access, and cloud usage policies
- Follow established operational and reporting processes
Required Skills & Experience
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Azure
- Experience with Azure Cost Management and Billing
- Understanding of cloud pricing models and consumption-based services
- Hands-on experience in cloud cost analysis and optimization
- Proficiency in spreadsheet-based financial analysis and reporting
Certifications (Preferred)
- Microsoft Azure fundamentals or administration certifications
