Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and file motor fuel tax returns for assigned jurisdictions.
- Perform tax reconciliations and resolve discrepancies across systems and GL accounts.
- Investigate, document, and track exceptions to closure.
- Support tax audits, notices, and compliance reviews.
- Research fuel tax laws, rates, exemptions, and regulatory changes.
- Validate tax treatment of fuel transactions and maintain tax system configurations.
- Analyze large transaction datasets to identify compliance risks and tax exceptions.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Operations, Technology, Legal, and external authorities on tax matters.
- Maintain audit-ready documentation and support registrations, licenses, and permits.
- Drive process improvements, automation, controls, and compliance initiatives.
Specific Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of U.S. motor fuel excise taxes and fuel accounting.
- Experience in tax return preparation, reconciliations, audits, and tax research.
- Proficiency in Excel and analysis of large datasets.
- Understanding of GL accounting and account reconciliations.
- Experience with Avalara Excise or similar tax platforms preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
- Ability to interpret tax regulations and apply them operationally.
- Strong communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines in a rapid-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors/Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Taxation, Business, or related field.
- Professional qualification or relevant experience in taxation/accounting is an advantage.
- Experience in motor fuel tax, indirect tax, excise tax, fuel accounting, retail fuel operations, or tax compliance preferred.
