ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Steel Mont Group is looking for an experienced Iron Ore Trader to drive sourcing, trading, and commercial strategy across both domestic and international markets. The role requires a strong understanding of iron ore mining, quality specifications, beneficiation, port logistics, and trade financing, along with the ability to build and manage relationships with mines, steel mills, trading houses, and port-based counterparties.
The successful candidate will bring an established network across the iron ore value chain — from mine owners and beneficiation plants to steel mills and international buyers — along with a proven track record of originating and executing profitable trading strategies in both domestic and export/import markets.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Sourcing & Supply Development
- Identify, map, and maintain relationships with iron ore mines, beneficiation plants, and exploration projects across domestic and international markets.
- Develop sourcing strategies to secure long-term supply agreements with mine operators and suppliers.
- Evaluate mine production capacity, ore quality, logistics, and expansion potential; conduct site visits and technical assessments where required.
2. Trading & Commercial Strategy
- Lead the development and execution of iron ore trading and sales strategies across domestic and international markets.
- Identify and originate current trading opportunities with steel mills, trading houses, and distributors.
- Negotiate supply and off-take contracts, pricing mechanisms, and commercial terms with counterparties.
- Drive revenue growth and trading margins through proactive market positioning and portfolio optimisation, including blending and arbitrage opportunities.
3. Quality & Beneficiation Management
- Maintain strong understanding of iron ore product specifications (Fe content, impurities,
moisture) and blending requirements.
- Coordinate with processing plants, mine operators, and inspection agencies to ensure ore meets domestic and export quality standards.
- Monitor quality control, sampling procedures, and laboratory testing; resolve quality and delivery issues with stakeholders.
4. Market Intelligence & Industry Mapping
- Monitor iron ore market fundamentals including pricing trends, supply flows, steel demand, freight rates, and competitor activity.
- Maintain a comprehensive database of iron ore deposits, mines, beneficiation plants, and logistics infrastructure.
- Provide market insights and strategic recommendations to senior management to guide trading decisions.
5. Logistics, Documentation & Export-Import Coordination
- Coordinate transport from mines to ports, including trucking, rail, container, and bulk vessel movements.
- Work with port operators, CHA agents, and shipping companies for efficient domestic dispatch and export/import operations.
- Manage end-to-end documentation, including bills of lading, certificates of origin, packing lists, and shipment scheduling.
6. Regulatory & Compliance Management
- Ensure all sourcing and trading activities comply with applicable mining laws, environmental regulations, and domestic/export-import requirements (including DGFT and customs).
- Manage permits, licenses, and regulatory approvals related to mining, trading, and export logistics.
- Liaise with government authorities, regulators, and local stakeholders; monitor changes in regulatory frameworks affecting the business.
7. Financing & Trading Structures
- Develop relationships with banks, financial institutions, and commodity trade finance providers.
- Structure transactions involving inventory financing, letters of credit,
and back-to-back trading.
- Work with internal finance and risk teams to manage credit exposure and trading risk.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- 10+ years of experience in iron ore trading, mining, or commodities sourcing, across both domestic and international markets.
- Deep knowledge of the iron ore mining and trading ecosystem, including mines, beneficiation plants, steel mills, and port trading networks.
- Proven track record in trading, sourcing, and commercial strategy development, with strong negotiation skills.
- Working knowledge of iron ore quality specifications, beneficiation processes, and blending requirements.
- Sound understanding of mining laws, environmental regulations, and export-import compliance (DGFT/customs).
- Knowledge of shipping and logistics for both containerized and bulk vessel cargo is an added advantage.
- Understanding of commodity trade finance and local/international financing structures.
- International exposure or experience working across global iron ore markets preferred.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, including to mining regions and ports.
EDUCATION & SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Metallurgy, Business, or a related field.
- MBA or advanced technical/commercial qualification preferred.
- Strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and commercial leadership skills.
- Proficiency in English required; knowledge of additional languages relevant to key trading markets is a plus.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- Entrepreneurial and commercially driven mindset with strong strategic thinking.
- Excellent relationship builder across complex stakeholder networks (mines, mills, traders, regulators).
- High integrity and solid compliance orientation.
