WebSphere Commerce Technical Lead
Level: Lead (contract)
Engagement: Contract
& Qualifications
Job Summary
Lead a delivery squad on HD Supply’s B2B eCommerce platform across HCL Commerce / WebSphere Commerce (WCS) v8, Next.js storefront, and Spring Boot services. Provide Ready-to-Serve technical leadership: you design, code, review, and ship — and you keep the team unblocked, quality-gated, and aligned with architecture during dual-run. Maintain and enhance commerce applications; coordinate day-to-day project work with developers, QA, and project leads.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
· Lead design and development of application components in an Agile environment — WCS storefront and business logic, Java/Spring Boot services, and Next.js / React storefront — and assign/split work so the squad can execute.
· Drive requirements into buildable stories: document WCS / HCL Commerce functionality and related enhancements; plan integration testing, integration development, data conversion, and cut-over with QA and DevOps.
· Design, develop, and implement multi-tier commerce applications (web and backend) to support B2B requirements, including punchout and other customer purchasing-system channels still on Commerce.
· Create and review designs; enforce re-usability, performance, and best practices for Commerce, services, and Java. Run design and code review for the squad.
· Own the team’s quality bar: unit testing before QA, defect triage, root-cause on issues that span WCS, Spring Boot, and Next.js.
· Support the full life cycle of storefront pages, store data, store business logic, Commerce tools customization,
and back-end integration.
· Implement and review Java and Spring Boot solutions; extend or consume APIs that wrap or replace Commerce capabilities as pages move off WCS.
· Lead Next.js / React storefront delivery so migrated and unmigrated journeys stay consistent.
· Plan and track sprint commitments; escalate risks early; partner with the architect on patterns (do not invent a parallel stack).
· Coach Software Engineer 2 contractors and FTE developers; raise the floor on Commerce, Spring Boot, and Next.js practice.
· Identify key barriers and apply problem-solving to complex situations. Be the first technical escalation for the squad.
Skills and Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
· 8+ years professional software engineering; 2+ years as a technical lead (or equivalent) of engineers delivering production commerce or similarly complex systems.
· 7+ years expertise in HCL Commerce and/or IBM WebSphere Commerce (WCS) 8.x — store customization, business logic, tools, catalog/order/user flows, and back-end integration. v8 experience is the hiring bar; later Commerce versions are a plus, not a substitute.
· 7+ years Java development and OOD skills on large IT systems (J2EE on WebSphere Application Server strongly preferred).
· 4+ years Spring / Spring MVC; hands-on Spring Boot (REST APIs, service integration) required — not “Spring on a résumé only.”
· 5+ years web services (REST and SOAP).
· 5+ years source control (Git required; SVN/CVS acceptable as prior experience).
· 3+ years JavaScript, HTML, CSS; Next.js and React production experience required. TypeScript preferred.
· Experience leading in Agile using Atlassian tools (Jira, Bitbucket/Git, Confluence) — story quality, reviews, and delivery, not only personal tickets.
· Robust communication skills; proven ability to lead a mixed FTE/contractor team.
Preferred
· B2B commerce, punchout, and/or mobile commerce.
· Headless / composable commerce (API-first storefront consuming Commerce or BFF/microservices). MuleSoft or similar iPaaS.
· Additional JS frameworks (Angular, Vue) as secondary experience.
· Search (Solr), cache (Redis or similar), CMS-driven storefront (Optimizely or equivalent).
· Experience working Preview vs Runtime Commerce stacks without treating them as the same environment.
· Prior dual-run or phased storefront migration.
What this role is not
· Not a project manager who does not code. This is a hands-on lead; expect substantial design and implementation time.
· Not a greenfield-only Next.js or Spring Boot lead.
· Not IBM WebSphere Portal or generic Java EE without Commerce.
· Not the solution architect of record (that is the Architect role); you execute and enforce the agreed design.
